The Great Lakes Bottom Mapping Workgroup’s website is fully launched and stuffed with information to get those working in bathymetric and benthic data up to speed.
The group’s exists to “harmonize the collection, sharing, and use of lake floor data for the great lakes and connecting channels.” Many areas of the Great Lakes have not been mapped since the 1950’s, and many of the existing datasets are hard to access or use. That's why the BMW is working to create continuous, high-resolution maps and datasets for bathymetry, habitat, maritime cultural resources, and biology.

Find members of the group in Traverse City, MI this fall supporting Lakebed 2030.

New kiosk at Maumee State Park Lodge gives visitors critical water condition and beach closure information

Vacationers at the Maumee Bay State Park Lodge now have a way to tell, in real-time, the condition of the waters they came to see, right from the lobby.

In mid July, The University of Toledo Lake Erie Center and the HABs Collaboratory installed a lobby kiosk that features five resources to educate guests about harmful algae and current conditions in the bay, an area typically hit hard by algal blooms. Resources include the NOAA/CIGLR HAB Tracker the NOAA HAB bulletin, MODIS Satellite imagery, and live buoy data courtesy of the GLOS HABs Portal.

Rachel Lohner is the education program manager at University of Toledo and was part of the team that built the resource in response to a need expressed by lodge staff.

“They get a lot of questions about why the beaches are closed, what’s being done about that, any more information they can have about beach quality, conditions, and causes,” she said. “The kiosk hopefully will answer some of those questions.”

The HABs Portal offers real-time and historical measurements from observing equipment in Lake Erie. Much of the equiptment is located at water treatment facilities and helps water managers make smarter decisions about how to handle water coming into their plants, especially during peak bloom season.
