Vortex by Andrew Ooi
Through use of pattern, shape, and colour, primitive man transitioned from communication to expression, from messenger to maker.  Meta-Chroma is an exploration of this very transition, including deliberate use of man's accessible tools and techniques--also done by hand--with Japanese gampi (root) paper.
I cut the paper, first into strips, then sections, and crease the marks required to shape the work. Once scored, I individually paint each piece of paper with traditional geometric shapes and lines. When I have made a number of similar colour (paper) strips satisfying a particular form I intend to construct, I fold each strip along certain score marks which I then fit into one another by adapting Japanese joinery techniques.
