ALLYSON SIMMIE, PORTRAIT

BIO  I spent years travelling and living across Canada and in Canada’s Arctic giving workshops, establishing jewellery studios, teaching and encouraging others to pursue a career in the arts.

In 2000 I moved back to Nova Scotia and began work on Seal Rock Studio. My family and I currently live on Nova Scotia’s scenic South Shore. I continue to work as a professional artist, exploring the theme of the Canadian and Arctic landscapes – sharing my experiences both North and South.

ARTIST STATEMENT  The reward is in the act of observing. Stone colours, textures, the shape of leaves, the ebb and flow of the sea, the changing seasons - all of these things continue to inspire my work. A gesture of thanks and appreciation.
At first it was a technical challenge - to really learn to see the natural world and to develop techniques to capture a sense of it in metal. But as time has passed I am now realizing another purpose: Connection. People connecting to place, places connecting to each other and our shared connection to the world around us.
Almost 20 years ago one of my students said the following to me: "The moon casts three shadows you know.”
I am still thinking about it.

TWILIGHT OF THE SEASONS RING

TWILIGHT OF THE SEASON  Allyson's newest Canadian Landscape ring contrasts a moonlit silver landscape shining against a velvety black sky. This ring is 9mm wide, $380.

Crystalline Snowflake earrings Stering silver, 17mm diameter, $160

THE CRYSTALLINE SNOWFLAKE SERIES is created using an image of a 100 year old snowflake. Sterling silver, 17 mm diameter, $160.

WILSON BENTLEY
BENTLEY'S SNOWFLAKE
NWT MACE
20 years ago this year I was honoured to be part of a team of artists chosen to design and produce the Mace for the Legislature of the Northwest Territories. We designed the 'crown' of the mace to resemble a three-dimensional snowflake.
Design research was inspired by the thousands of images of snow crystals taken by Wilson A. Bentley, a pioneer in microphotography: "I found the variety and beauty of these snowflakes to be absolutely breathtaking, and ever since then I have been working toward finding a way to capture that delicate beauty in sterling silver."
SNOWFLAKE PENDANT
SHORELINE PENDANT

CRYSTALLINE SNOWFLAKE PENDANT in sterling silver, 23 mm x 30 mm, $180
SHORELINE PENDANT in sterling silver with a 24k gold sun, 24 mm x 30 mm, $360.

TWO ONE SHORELINE RING

THE TWO TONE SHORELINE SERIES RING was inspired by the ocean’s timeless shaping of our coastline. This ring has 14k yellow gold islands, trees and rocky shore of Mahone Bay NS against a sterling silver sky and capped with a 3 pt diamond sun; 8 mm, $980.. Also available in different widths, and with straight or wavy edges.

TREELINE BANGLES

THE TREELINE SERIES BANGLES were inspired by the landscape of the Northwest Territories. The trees of the Boreal forest, rolling hills, sun and moon are all showcased in dramatic silhouette. Sterling silver, 10 mm wide, $480 each.

Northern Lights Pendant Sterling silver, Labradorite, 30mm in diameter, $360

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS PENDANT  focuses on a large Labradorite stone from Taber Island, Labrador.  Light and colour shimmer in and out very much like the Northern Lights as it is nestled in a sterling silver tree line.  This pendant is 30mm in diameter, $360.
