Surviving the Big One:
Understanding and Preparing for
a Major Earthquake
in Western Oregon

Guest Speaker:  Althea Rizzo,
Geohazards Program Coordinator
Oregon Emergency Management

FRIDAY, APRIL 19

“WHEN”, not “if”  . . .   that’s what professional geologists say when warning us about a major earthquake in the Pacific Northwest.  Just last month, the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission reported that we must be prepared (and we’re not) for a quake possibly larger than the 2011Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan.

The sleeping giant threatening the Pacific Northwest is known as the Cascadia Subduction Zone.  The last known Cascadia earthquake is believed to have occurred in about 1700.   No one can predict the next big quake, but, historically, there have been 41 of these major earthquakes in the past 10,000 years.

How can we personally be prepared?  Our speaker, Dr. Althea Rizzo, will help us:

  • Gain a fundamental understanding of the Cascadia Subduction Zone.
  • Understand the probable effects of a major quake on western Oregon and the I-5 corridor
  • Learn how to be a survivor, not a victim, of a Cascadia event
Althea Rizzo has been the Geohazards Program Coordinator of the Oregon Office of Emergency Management since July, 2008.  She is a member of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program, the Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup, and the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission.  Dr. Rizzo holds a doctorate degree in Design & Human Environment/Anthropology from Oregon State University.

Please join us as Friday, April 19th as we learn about “Surviving the Big One: Understanding and Preparing for a Major Earthquake in Western Oregon.”  As is our tradition we meet at the Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill in the Spinning Room.   For lunch reservations email rsvp@salemcityclub.com before noon Wednesday, April 16, 2013.  Parking is free.  Doors open at 11:30 AM.  For more information on this program please go to www.salemcityclub.com.
