Get composting at your apartment complex or condo

Austin Resource Recovery is conducting a pilot to test composting at apartments and condos. Any apartment or condo can apply to participate and, if accepted, will get six months of compost collection services reimbursed by the City. The application due date has been extended to February 14, 2020. Applications must be submitted by property owners or their authorized representatives. Talk to your property manager and encourage them to apply.

Return of the Supply: Stage Set for Fifth Annual Reverse Pitch Competition

Each year, Austin entrepreneurs gather business ideas from a very unlikely source: local dumpsters. But not just any dumpster— a business’s dumpster. The annual [Re]Verse Pitch Competition is a social innovation program that helps turn valuable raw materials that are currently leaving local businesses as waste into a resource for a new business. The opening pitch is happening on February 10.

New life for old Christmas trees

Following the festivities of the holiday season, Austinites gave their Christmas trees a second life by recycling them. After taking off the ornaments and decorations, Austin Resource Recovery customers put their trees out for curbside pickup. Other residents dropped off their trees at Zilker Metropolitan Park, where they were turned into mulch.

Batteries for recycling
February 18 is National Battery Day. Did you know there are battery recycling drop-off sites all over Austin? Make a positive environmental impact by keeping used batteries out of the landfill. Find the sites near you.

Remember: place your carts at the curb by 6:30 a.m. and give them some room to breathe! Placing carts 5 feet apart allows collection crews to safely pick them up and empty them out.

Social media success: after sharing a post on Facebook, we were able to reunite this adorable ornament (circa 1982) with its rightful owner. It was found during a past year’s Christmas Tree Recycling event.
