Get free mulch at Zilker Park

Christmas trees collected at Zilker Park are getting a second life as wonderful, piney smelling mulch! Mulch will be available completely FREE of charge starting January 17, and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Be sure to bring your own tools such as gloves, shovels and storage containers for loading and transporting mulch.

Common Cents: Material Trades Teach Kids about Money & Sustainability

Austin Materials Marketplace (AMM) has been helping even the youngest of start-ups reap the benefits of the circular economy. Moolah U, one of AMM’s newest participants, uses entrepreneurial summer camps to teach business basics and financial literacy to kids ages seven through 16.  Over the course of a typical week, Moolah U guides campers through pitching product ideas, applying for venture capital micro-loans, and producing and selling original merchandise. This past summer, they encouraged their young entrepreneurs to create upcycled products from materials listed on the Austin Materials Marketplace.

What is the circular economy, anyway?

In the Zero Waste world, we often talk about used items that are about to be tossed into a bin. Making sure that as many of these items as possible go into a bin other than a trash can, so they can be recycled or composted instead, is critical to Zero Waste.

But what can we do to keep fewer items from being tossed out? What if everything around us was designed to be adapted, repaired, or reused? That’s the vision of the circular economy, which could make a major positive impact on our economic prosperity.
