CA Democratic Party Women's Caucus Supports #BringBackOurGirls Leader Rep. Fredericka Wilson and Demands that iHeartRadio Fire Host Bill Handel for His Hateful Comments Degrading Her; Urges All to Cosign Color of Change's Online Petition

Resolution by the California Democratic Party Women's Caucus Executive Board supporting Rep Wilson and demanding that iHeartMedia fire Bill Handel for his hateful comments degrading her:

WHEREAS, the California Democratic Party Women's Caucus has long supported Florida Congresswoman Fredericka Wilson's #BringBackOurGirls efforts to support the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped en masse in 2014 and to shine a light on the deadly, rapacious Boko Haram terrorists whom her mentee Army Sgt. LaDavid Johnson was fighting in Niger at the time of his untimely death on October 4, 2017; and

WHEREAS, we believe Rep. Wilson, a close friend of the Johnson family, who heard the phone call made to Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson by President Donald Trump and said publicly that Trump’s attempt at condolence was insensitive and made the young woman cry; and

WHEREAS, we denounce President Trump and his allies like iHeartRadio host Bill Handel of KFI radio Los Angeles who have viciously attacked Rep Wilson and lied about this Gold Star family of a young man and honorable soldier who sacrificed his life for our country; and

WHEREAS, journalist and social issues and political commentator Jasmyne Cannick reported Handel’s comments (subsequently scrubbed from the KFI website) as follows: In responding to comments from Thomas about Rep. Wilson blasting President Trump for telling the pregnant widow of a Sgt. La David Johnson killed in Niger that her 25-year-old husband “knew what he signed up for” Handel said, “I’m far more upset with her because that is a cheap affectation–she’s a cheap sleazy–ah–Democrat whore is what she is. Okay–no excuse me–I’m being too generous to her.” When Thomas, to his credit, tried to correct Handel and tone down Handel’s rhetoric, Handel repeated the slur by saying, “I would add the word whore. There are a few other words I could throw in there but I want to stay working here" and

WHEREAS, Bill Handel's hateful, outrageous, and unacceptable comments are far outside the circle of civil political discourse and sadly part of a disturbing pattern by President Donald Trump and some of his conservative allies to belittle and degrade women of color who challenge him; and

WHEREAS, the community has risen up and Color of Change has channeled our anger into action with this petition to fire Bill Handel

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the California Democratic Party Women's Caucus unequivocally uplifts American war hero La David Johnson's family in our prayers and supports his mentor, Congresswoman Wilson, in her demand for answers about his death for our country fighting Boko Haram in Niger; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we demand that IHeartRadio fire Bill Handel for his hateful, outrageous, and unacceptable insults hurled at Congresswoman Wilson and urge all to cosign the Color of Change online petition:
