January 3, 2013:  Autism Society of Nebraska Newsgram

By Megan Misegadis, Autism Society of Nebraska President

Hello,

It’s my pleasure to wish you a Happy New Year from the Autism Society of Nebraska!

In 2012 we focused our goals in three primary areas:  financial assistance, advocacy and support.

In the area of financial assistance, 2012 was a year of growth for the Autism Society of Nebraska.  Our financial assistance to individuals, groups and educators increased over 200% in response to over 140 requests from individuals and families seeking individual and conference grants and over 50 requests by classroom educators seeking our new education mini grants to purchase items to help students with autism in their classrooms.  ASN was able to provide tens of thousands of dollars in financial assistance in 2012.

Our advocacy also increased in 2012.  Each board member of ASN was involved in a national Autism Society of America working group along with other states in areas of Collaboration, Bullying, Employment, CDC and underserved populations and Quality of Life Issues.  In 2013 we will have members attending the Day on the Hill in Washington DC speaking directly to Legislators about autism issues in our state.

As a parent of a child with autism I am personally aware of the need for support, through advocacy, information and belonging.  We are happy to report that our membership has increased 250% to 370 members, and our Newsgram subscribers have increased 30% to nearly 1400 email addresses.

Most importantly ASN has been able to provide countless hours of support, meetings and opportunities for people to hear, listen and talk about autism.  Friendships were developed around these events and gatherings across the state, and these friendships and connections are the greatest benefit ASN can provide those impacted by autism.

Sincerely,

Megan Misegadis
Autism Society of Nebraska
President
