Sumner Bays Union Trust Newsletter 6 December 2012
Summer is here and yesterday proved it! I hope that everyone has recovered from the heat.
Sumner Redcliffs Community Carols is coming up on Thursday 13 December at Scarborough Park, weather permitting. Thanks to Paul Costley for organising the programme for the night. This year the event will feature the Sumner Silver Band conducted by Steve Griffin, the Sumner School Choir conducted by Robyn Lean, the Christchurch School of Music Primary Schools Outreach Concert Band (including students from Redcliffs, Beckenham and Opawa Schools) conducted by Maree Parr, and singer Eddie Simon. Thank you to Peter Croft for his assistance and to Langham Signs for their support. Redcliffs Public Library and the Christchurch Coastal Pathway group will run the barbecue starting at 6 pm. Thank you to SBS Ferrymead for loaning their BBQ trailer again this year. It will be a great night, with a not-entirely-unexpected special guest during the evening. The massed singing will begin from 6.45 pm.
Rockers of Ages Choir will be moving in the New Year to the Redcliffs Shed for their rehearsals at 99C Main Road, starting in term one. It has been great working with Nikki and Gary of The Muse over the last year to make this choir happen.
The Senior Expo was a fantastic success on Friday 9 November. Thanks to all the groups and visitors who made this morning what it was. We look forward to repeating the event next November.
The Redcliffs Community Shed is well on its way towards completion. Recently a mad hatter’s tea party was held with a visiting milliner. The Shed committee includes Reg Dalley (Chair and Shed Coordinator), Dave Kennedy, Pete Hoskins, Wendy Rendle, Maureen Gray and I. In the New Year the Sumner Bays Union Trust office will move to the Shed permanently.
The final sessions for Mini Music will be held on Thursday 13 December (Redcliffs) and Tuesday 18 December (Sumner) and will resume in the first week of term one next year. Following the final sessions, we will be celebrating with a Christmas morning tea. Mini Music Redcliffs will be located in the Redcliffs Union Church in term one with repairs likely to require us to move to the Redcliffs Public Library at the Tennis Club hall in term two. We will give families plenty of notice regarding the move. The Sumner session will continue at the old School Hall kitchen. Thank you to Cathy White who has facilitated our Mini Music sessions since they began in 2009. Cathy will be on maternity leave for 2013 and we are in the process of appointing a new tutor for 2013. We wish Cathy, Paul and their family all the best for 2013, and hope to see Cathy’s return in 2014 with baby #4.
The Local Food Project and the Sumner-van Asch Community Garden have flourished this year. Thank you so much to Bailey, Susan, Lucy, Liz and everyone else involved. Warren and family have been great looking after the Redcliffs Community Garden this year. If you would like to get involved in any of these initiatives, you are very welcome.
Sumner Tea & Talk will hold its final session for the year on Monday 17 December with a Christmas party. Thanks to all the volunteers who have supported this new initiative. We look forward to returning in mid-January. Redcliffs Coffee & Conversation will hold its final session on Thursday 20 December, also with a Christmas party. The first Coffee & Conversation for 2013 will be held on Thursday 17 January 2013.
Congratulations to Win Collins on her recent 90th birthday. The Redcliffs Craft Group has continued to be a great project under Win's expert guidance. This operates on Thursday afternoons, 1 - 3 pm at 1 Bayview Road and will return in 2013.
Sumner Bays Union Trust held its 4th annual general meeting on Wednesday 14 November 2012. Thank you to the board for their oversight, wisdom, and loyal support of the activities that run under the Trust’s auspices. Denny Richardson was re-elected as chair, Bruce Reilly as treasurer and Malcolm & Mary Moore, Peter Croft, Lydia MacKinnon and Vicki Hyde were re-elected as board members. Thank you to everyone who attended.
