 Dear all,

I hope that this email finds you well and that you are looking forward to Christmas in a few days time.

Ticket sales are now open for the Star Tavern January luncheon. The link to book a ticket for this is in the events section below.

As mentioned previously, we are planning on getting the new Society handbook ready for early next year. We have a first draft of the names and contact details of all members who did not opt out of being included in the handbook. Please click here to view this list. Do take a look and let me know if there are any changes to your contact details by Wednesday 5th January 2022. This is also your last opportunity to join the Society in time to be included in the handbook. We are running a special competition for new Society members. Scroll down the newsletter to learn more.

I would also like to notify all non members, that from January the newsletter will now only be sent to members of the Society. So if you are not a member, you will no longer receive the newsletter. If you would like to continue receiving the newsletter, please consider joining the Society by clicking here.

Do let me know if you have any questions and I hope that you have a lovely Christmas.

Fr Boniface has shared the following documents with you all:
  • Bruce Duncan (53/58) has written a book titled The Loan Soldier.  Bruce delivered the 1st Basil Gwydir lecture based on the book in November 2018. Whilst it costs £19.99, if you order it through the Publishers; Greenfinch Press, Petrospot House, Somerville Court, Trinity Way, Adderbury, BANBURY, OX17 3SN, or through Bruce stating that you're a member of the Douai Society, it will cost £10 plus p&p.
  • Francis Davis ( 83/85) has been appointed Professor of Civic Leadership and International Studies and Head of Digby Stuart College at the University of Roehampton starting in 2022. He will also be Visiting Professor a the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham.
  •  Roger Aylward (staff 74/99) has been in touch to let us know about a recent article in The Rugby Paper: 'In the (national) 'The Rugby Paper' last week was a full page article on the history of Douai Rugby, a fascinating read, especially for rugby loving Old Dowegians. I was appointed as Head of PE in 1974 (straight out of Loughborough College after my degree at Bristol University) to build up a new P. E. Dept and develop Soccer in the Easter term. For a small independent school, we had considerable success including wins over Charterhouse and Malvern College and with David Elleray as President and me as Chairman, we did a lot to promote and expand Easter term Soccer in many independent schools (L. T. S. S, Lent Term Soccer Schools) and I hosted an annual 6-a-side tournament at Douai which included teams like Charterhouse, Harrow and  R G. S  Worcester to name just a few. This said, Rugby was always the main winter sport at Douai with Soccer struggling along in its shadow. I ran the soccer for all of my 25 years at Douai (only John Shaw and George Benbow also completed 25 years as lay staff) as Head of  P. E. and Games and in my later years was the first lay Assistant Housemaster (to Faringdon) and then Head of the Junior School, basically Ditcham House, years 6-8.'
  • If you would like to read the article mentioned above by Roger it can be found here, but a subscription is required to read the full article.
  • Eddie Ottmann (70/75) passed away on 3rd November 2021.
