Welcome! This week our roundup of interesting and noteworthy industry stories includes the findings of Mary Meeker's annual report on Internet trends, the continuing consolidation of tech news sites, how publishers are using newsletters as a platform on its own, factors that influence the persuasiveness of data visuals, and more.

Mary Meeker's Internet trends report was released, highlighting a wide range of tech/media topics, among them the exploding rate of content creation, why messaging apps are the space to watch, where ad spending is going, the rise of video and on-demand, and how tech is impacting the economy.

Vox acquired Re/code, a tech news site struggling to stay afloat amid industry consolidations and even shutdowns of sites like Gigaom. Though Re/code is expected to continue operations uninterrupted, Fortune pointed to the uncertain future of TechCrunch and Engadget following the recent purchase of parent AOL by Verizon. AOL, however, has indicated that there are no immediate changes planned at this time, the report said.

The newsletter as a platform on its own is a trend publishers are exploring instead of trying to push users to click through to their sites for content. Digiday highlighted some successful examples like the Quartz Daily Brief and the Presidential Daily Brief from Ozy Media.

The persuasiveness of data visuals depends greatly on the viewer, not just the charts or graphics used to highlight points, according to a report from Harvard Business Review. For one, readers' attitude, mood, gender, and personality type matter, along with their ability to make sense of the visual presentation, among other factors.
