Welcome! This week our roundup of interesting and noteworthy publishing industry stories focuses on Meredith's acquisition of Shape and its plans to merge it with Fitness magazine, the real value of paid content models, the potential of Snapchat's Discover mobile news feature, a leadership change at Taunton Press, and more.
Meredith bought Shape and announced it's merging it with Fitness magazine, bumping up its rate base from 1.6 million to 2.5 million, according to Capital New York. Tom Witschi, president of the media company's Women's Lifestyle Group, said the idea is to incorporate the best elements from each brand into a "category killer."

The real value of paywall systems may lie in the audience data publishers are able to glean from them. NetNewsCheck reported that in addition to providing a digital revenue stream, paid content models can open up huge opportunities to more effectively create content, target advertising, and structure offerings and subscriptions.

Snapchat's new Discover feature is bringing mobile-native news to the popular chat application, and big media companies like CNN, ESPN, and National Geographic are on board. A Nieman Lab article said the move has the potential to be "a significant moment in the evolution of mobile news."

Taunton Press President Tim Rahr announced he's stepping down after 16 years with the special-interest publisher and that industry veteran Dan McCarthy will be taking his place on an interim basis. Rahr said the company is in a strong position and that he will continue to work with the board and McCarthy until a new CEO is chosen.
