This Week in Publishing

Welcome! This week our roundup of interesting and noteworthy publishing industry stories focuses on Pew’s annual State of the News Media report, the choice between mobile apps and mobile websites, recent organizational upheavals in the media industry, and more.

PUBLISHING INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK:

  • Pew’s 2013 State of the News Media report reveals “a news industry that is more undermanned and unprepared to uncover stories, dig deep into emerging ones or to question information put into its hands.” See the PBS Media Usage blog for five key takeaways from the report.

  • According to a Compuware report, most smartphone and tablet users prefer mobile apps over websites designed for mobile devices. Of the 3,500 global users surveyed, 85% favor mobile apps because they are “more convenient, faster and easier to navigate” than mobile websites.

  • The Alliance for Audited Media announced a mandatory reporting requirement starting in July for magazines with circulations greater than 250,000. About 240 publications will have to provide sales data to the AAM by the end of the month following each issue or face sanctions.
