Welcome! This week our roundup of interesting and noteworthy publishing industry stories covers the momentum behind live video streaming app Meerkat, the newly launched Economist Films group, Marie Claire's first fully sponsored cover, a study on how millennials get their news (and whether they're willing to pay for it), and more.
Live video streaming app Meerkat was launched just last month but has already built a considerable following, including not only big brands and media users like the BBC and Mashable, but a growing list of potential investors. The platform is gaining momentum so fast that Twitter, which recently bought a competing video app, is trying to block it.

At Economist Films, a new Economist Group video unit, the focus is on growing the 172-year-old publisher's audience and sponsorships with an expanded offering of premium video series, features, and documentaries. The group's president said it may eventually produce and license longer films, but for now, the goal is to create a foundation of "world-class content" on which the company can build new platform, distribution, and sponsorship models.

Marie Claire's first fully sponsored cover is part of parent Hearst's effort to push forward with native advertising in both its print and digital publications. The magazine's editor in chief said the cover complies with guidelines from the American Society of Magazine Editors and that editorial and business teams share ideas to present a unified brand but remain strictly separate.

A study on millennials' news consumption found that most at least occasionally find news on social media sites (often "accidentally"), with Facebook leading the pack, but they also use a variety of other sources, including search and original reported sources. Another takeaway is that most aren't willing to pay for it. Said one 19-year-old interviewee: "I really wouldn't pay for any type of news because as a citizen it's my right to know the news."
