A Month to Heart Running

President's Corner:

Hi Striders! It's great to be kicking off another year of running with this running community.  The wintery weather has slowed us but will not stop our dedicated community (it may stop me though...burrr)! I'm excited to see so many in-person races posted on Facebook and looking forward to hearing about everyone's running adventures as the year unfolds.  This year has a lot of promise. This year has a lot of potential.  Let's get out there and motivate one another and love running.

New Member Alert...

Name: James Sterling (go by James or Tag)
Let's all welcome James!

Can you tell us a little about you: I’m 36, recently moved from St Louis, I’m a program manager for IT/cyber/software development with the Air Force. Married and have a one-year-old daughter (plus two fur babies). I’m a community-builder, so I’m looking forward to helping grow Kingstowne Striders and meet new people with a shared interest! Also, Go Blue!

What are your running goals: Improve running form and gradually increase miles to reduce pain over long distances.  Consistency! Hope to run the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile race and the Marine Corps 10k. I’ve only run two half marathons in the past; one was well-trained for and the other was…not.

What is on your running playlist: Upbeat Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran (this plays into my nickname “Tag”…ask me about it on a run). Or Binge Mode: Harry Potter podcast! I love taking scenic runs in new areas to be a better tourist in my own city.

Can you tell us a non-running fact about you: I have two webbed toes on each foot…and no, it doesn’t help me swim faster :)

Thanks James for introducing yourself!!

Benefits of Cold Weather Running
It can be a challenge to drag yourself out of your warm snuggly home to run in the dead of winter.  However, there are benefits to cold weather running...

Such as:

  • It helps with "cold habituation", meaning it increases your body's tolerance for cold weather
  • It decreases the impact of SAD (seasonal affective disorder) by providing an opportunity for natural light exposure which helps your circadian rhythm, physical exercise boosts your mood, and running outdoors gives more experience with nature helping us connect to the world around us
  • Rev's up your metabolism. You burn more calories when keeping warm in the cold.
  • And finally, it builds mental toughness to be tapped into during spring racing season.
Remember to enjoy those frosty runs with proper gear and safety precautions.  The benefits of cold weather running make it all worth it!
