Office Hours:

O day of peace that dimly shines
Through all our hope and prayers and dreams.
Guide us to justice, truth and love;
Delivered from our selfish schemes
May swords of hate fall from our hands
Our hearts from envy find release.
Till by God’s grace our warring world.
Shall see Christ’s promised reign of peace.
Then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb,
Nor shall the fierce devour the small.
As beasts and cattle calmly graze
A little child shall lead them all.
Then enemies shall learn to love,
All creatures from their true accord.
The hope of peace shall be fulfilled
For all the earth shall know the Lord.
- Carl P. Davis Jr -

As we move into the final weeks of Advent in what so often seems a dark and troubled world, let us hold fast to the hope-filled, prophetic vision of justice and peace that is at the very heart of our Christmas celebration and our Christian faith.

Peace,
Pastor Richard
December Happenings around Mt. Carmel
First Sunday of Advent, Advent wreath-making activity was enjoyed by all on Sunday, December 2nd.
Thank you to our youth who led a wonderful worship service on Sunday, December 9th.
Blue Christmas/Longest Night Worship
Wednesday, December 19 at 7:00 PM

For a variety of reasons, not everyone is cheery for the Christmas holidays. Dealing with the death of a loved one, facing life after divorce or separation, coping with the loss of a job, living with cancer or some other disease that puts a question mark over the future, changes in our faith community and a number of other human situations can make this time of year especially painful for many people. This service is intended to create time and space for you. You may be going through a dark period this Christmas or be here with a friend or family member who is. No matter the source of the pain and grief or its magnitude, this time of reflection is offered to provide an opportunity to worship, as well as being reminded of the promise of Emmanuel—God's presence with us.
Christmas Eve Poinsettias

Orders for poinsettia plants for the Christmas Eve services will be taken until December 19th. Each plant is $6 and can be taken home after the 7:30 PM service.

Rebecca Keisler and Maureen Dresp will be on the patio Sunday mornings taking orders or you can mail to/drop by the church office (M-F/9 AM -12 PM). If you would like to note who you would like to dedicate ‘in honor of’ or ‘in memory of’ please make a note of that. Be sure to note POINSETTIA in the check memo.

We have resurrected the Pancake Palooza! Thanks to the mighty efforts of John and Rebecca Keisler and ten other sleep-deprived volunteers we fed 27 college students yummy pancakes (have you ever had Nutella pancakes?) on Monday night. This is a great restart of that event, especially considering that we don’t currently have students participating regularly at Mt. Carmel.

We are also working with Jake White, campus ministry director at the Methodist church. Jake is running a vibrant and growing program and has students from Cal Poly, Cuesta and Allen Hancock participating. We are exploring if Mt. Carmel might / could / should be supporting that ministry in an intentional and ongoing way. Those students meet every Sunday night at 6 PM for dinner and Jake has indicated that he would welcome Mt. Carmel providing food and also staying to eat with students. In addition, we are also exploring if Mt. Carmel might / could / should be a financial partner in that ministry.

Our next LCM meeting is on Tuesday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m. We welcome anyone who wants to come and join in our discussions about how Mt. Carmel ministers to the college students of San Luis Obispo. If you have questions, comments or ideas please contact Patti Frey 805-235-1938, or 1slonative@gmail.com.
