IMPORTANT UPDATE
Outdoor In-Person Worship Service Suspended

Sunday 12 noon In Person Outdoor Worship Suspended

In light of the post-Christmas rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the county and the possible presence of a more contagious variant in our region, we are suspending our Sunday 12 noon in-person worship for a time. Although we have followed county guidelines in our outdoor worship with social distancing and wearing masks—and want to emphasize that current measures are still believed by health officials to be effective in preventing COVID spread—we believe it is best to err on the side of caution as we await distribution of the vaccine. We will have a monthly evaluation of the situation and invite your input. We also recognize that some of our members will be disappointed by this suspension of in-person worship and are considering the possibility of smaller (limited to six persons) outdoor, physically-distanced in-person Bible study group(s) for those who may be interested. We will have further updates in upcoming VISTAs.

WORD
First Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-10 [11-20]
At a time when visions are rare and unexpected, the Lord comes to Samuel and calls him to speak the divine word. Though just a boy, Samuel responds to God obediently, as Eli the priest has taught him to respond. This marks the beginning of Samuel’s prophetic ministry.

Psalm 139

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20
Paul helps the Corinthians understand that God has claimed the entirety of their lives through the death of Christ. Hence Christian relationships and conduct, including areas of human sexuality, are to reflect the reality that we belong to Christ and that the Holy Spirit lives within us.

Affirmation of Faith
   We believe in God,
    the creator of all things,
the giver of life and breath.

    We believe in Jesus Christ,
    born Emmanuel, God with us,
    baptized and revealed the most beloved Son of God;
he sought to heal humanity by taking our brokenness upon himself,
    suffering for us,
    dying for us
and being raised from the dead for our sake
and for the sake of all the world.
We believe that he will come again.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
continually poured out refreshing our lives,
leading us into a new day,
ever-birthing the church, the body of Christ in the world.
This Spirit is our soul companion and counselor of truth
    reminding us
    of the gift of faith,
    the ever presence of God
and the promise of eternal life.
    Thanks be to God! Amen.

January 17 & 24: The Threat of Christian Nationalism

In light of the recent disturbing events in Washington D.C. and the increased visibility of white supremacy ideology in our nation, we are witnessing a rise in what is has been termed “Christian nationalism.” We will have a two-session series on the issue using a podcast series produced by Christians Against Christian Nationalism which feature statements by Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, Elizabeth Eaton, together with the Rev. Dr. Paul Baxley (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship), Diane Randall (Friends Committee on National Legislation), Sister Simone Campbell (NETWORK Lobby), and the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Haggray (American Baptist Home Mission Societies). You can listen to entire podcast series online at:

The Compassionate Life: Walking the Path of Kindness

 by Marc Ian Barasch

The award-winning bestseller that helped launch an international movement (and inspired the film "I Am"). Acclaimed author Marc Barasch brilliantly explores the nature and practice of compassion: What can we learn from exceptionally empathic people? Can we increase our compassion quotient? How do we open our hearts to those who do us harm? What if the great driving force of our evolution were actually survival of the kindest? Drawing on science and spirituality, history and popular culture, bottom-line business and a high-sense of fun, here is a startling, provocative argument that a simple shift in consciousness "can change pretty much everything."
