Pastor Notes....
The other day I came across a prayer that I had first heard in a class with Fr. Henri Nouwen on “The Spirituality of Thomas Merton.” As you may know, Merton was a Trappist monk whose early book The Seven Story Mountain, telling of his conversion to Roman Catholicism was very influential in the 1950’s. Over the course of his life, even as a monastic, he became an influential presence in the civil rights movement through books such as Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander. In his last years he was an especially powerful voice for ecumenism and interfaith cooperation, and his own meditative practices were influenced by the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh .
In this times of pandemic and national division, I believe Merton’s prayer speaks profoundly to our situation, reminding us that despite our fears and so much that seems unknown, God is with us.
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me.I
cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself.
And the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I
am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I have
that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything
apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by
the right road, though I may no nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the
shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will
never leave me to face my perils alone.

Matching Gifts Challenge Benefitting the SLO County Food Bank

A couple in our congregation will match donations up to $1000 made by members and friends to the SLO County Food Bank through June 30. The food bank is facing extra needs at this time and was thrilled to hear about the matching funds challenge.

Use this link to donate to the Mount Carmel matching funds challenge

If you prefer to donate to matching funds challenge by check, make your check out to the SLO County Food Bank. Write Mt. Carmel Matching Funds Drive on the memo line so that your donation will be properly credited.  Mail to:

Food Bank Coalition of SLO County
1180 Kendall Road
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Please do not route your food bank donations through Mount Carmel.  Doing so will delay your donation and make tracking the matching funds challenge donations difficult for the food bank to track.

Thank you to Mount Carmel for your always generous spirit!

Our first briefing will be on Monday, June 8 at 7 p.m.  We will share case notes on the second Monday of each month thereafter.

Our first case is Blood, Salt, Water - by Denise Mina. Please read and be prepared to discuss your findings with the rest of the squad. Bring your alias, fingerprint kit, magnifying glass and disguise.

For any questions about your assignment, call or text Detective Sgt. Patti (a.k.a. “Four Eyes Agatha”) Frey at (805) 235-1938.
