SPIT OUT THAT STRAW FOR GOOD!

Put down your smoothie, Big Gulp or to-go cup of coffee for a minute.  Let’s spend that minute thinking not about what you’re drinking, but what you’re drinking out of.  Is it paper, plastic, ceramic or glass?  What’s that straw made of, now that you’re thinking about it? A new consciousness about single-use plastics and the realities of how we package, serve and eat our food and beverages is cutting through our community. When we look at the garbage washing ashore, clogging... Read More »

And the timing could not have been better for Small Business Saturday as we were emerging from one of the worst recessions in US history where our local retailers were hit hard, many wondering how they would keep the shop doors open and their employees on the payroll.  But, as always, they did the heavy lifting in the face of great... Read More »

POSITIVE PEOPLE IN PINECREST – MAIA WENGER

Palmer Trinity School sophomore Maia Wenger recently delivered approximately 100 caps for children undergoing surgery at Baptist Children’s Hospital. She got the idea after being at the hospital for surgeries on her brother, who has special needs. “I’ve always seen him in the pre-op room with the blue surgical cap,” she says. “I raised money to buy fabrics like Disney ones.” She raised more than $200 for the first set of caps. “I plan on keeping going,” she says. “And go back in December and donate 50 to 100 more.” It took about 15 minutes to make each cap. Friends helped with the sewing.  “One of my mom’s friends knows how to sew,” Wenger says. “She did some of them.” She’s starting now to raise the money for the second set of caps... Read More »
