WHEN IT COMES TO EDUCATION, FLORIDA LEGISLATORS ARE DUMB

President George W. Bush said in a commencement speech at Southern Methodist University in 2015: “To those of you who are graduating this afternoon with high honors, awards and distinctions, I say, ‘Well done.’ And as I like to tell the C students, ‘You too, can be president.’” There is no dishonor is being a C student. There is dishonor in having a C-level education system. But that is where the State of Florida has put itself proudly — well below the middle of the pack.Education Week magazine graded each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Florida scored a 72, a low C overall. The average student’s chance for success was rated at 75.5; our school finance system got a lackluster D+, and our K-12 achievement received only a 73.9.Mental capital has replaced industrial capability as the engine driving the economy. So to compete, we need... Read More »

His message was simple and clear…”be prepared and have a plan”.  Just a few weeks later, we were all facing the prospect of another category 5 hurricane coming ashore in South Florida.  Several days out, when we looked... Read More »

Palmetto High School junior Koby Rouviere might look familiar to you if you watched the CBS TV series How I Met Your Mother. Rouviere played Marshall in flashbacks to his childhood. These days, being an actor is a hobby. He’s been in more than 40 commercials for companies such as Jell-O and Oxi Clean. “I’m not going to let it take over my life,” he says. “It’s a good thing to go back to.” The family moved to California in 2009 for six months so the kids could work in television and film, and then they came back. His brother Zachary and his sisters Taylor and Sydney have also been on TV shows, movies, and in commercials. In fact, the money all the kids made as actors was put into their college fund.
