Pleasant House Bakery News - March 2013: New Location News, Fete, New Places to Find Us, Pleasant Farms Report, and More

?! What could prompt us to lead with the interrobang, an obscure punctuation mark denoting excitement and curiosity? We think this announcement warrants it: we will be opening our second location this spring! But where will this new location be?! Now the interrobang is starting to make sense. Read below for some answers—but mostly teasers—about our next venture.
We realize it’s hard to top that, but we do have some other great news to share with you. As always, to hear the latest updates on our new projects at Pleasant House Bakery, including Royal Pies and other daily specials, follow us on Facebook and Twitter @PHBakery and @RoyalPies. (We have a Twitter account for our farm, Pleasant Farms, too: @PleasantFarms.)

As fans of Agatha Christie, Encyclopedia Brown, and even J. B. Fletcher, we love a good mystery. In the coming days we will be offering clues that will help unveil our new Pleasant House location. Think you know where we’ll be? Email us photos of your evidence at And remember: it pays to keep your proof a secret! All correct answers will be entered in a drawing, and one lucky sleuth among you will win dinner for two at the new location. The fewer correct guesses, the better your odds! We will reveal the answer in a special edition of our newsletter in a couple weeks (or until we just can't keep it zipped anymore!).
We know that suspense can be terrifying. Let’s start with a few common questions (answers below): 1. What will you be serving? 2. How will the place look? 3. Any other surprises we should know about? 4. Where will it be? We will be sharing snapshots of our progress, answering these and other questions, on Facebook and Twitter.
Pretty exciting stuff. Want to join the Pleasant House team on our latest adventure? Know someone who is bright, friendly, hard working, and knows his/her away around a food-farm establishment and would be a good match for us? Send us your resume and share our email address with potential candidates:
(Answers: 1. Royal Pies and other brilliant specialties, including a really top-secret surprise 2. Fabulous 3. Absolutely, and that’s part of the mystery 4. Nice try)

A Fete Fit for Royalty (We Will Be There. So Should You!)

The new food and design pop-up market and cultural festival Fete oozes awesomeness like a cheesy mound of our Deluxe Gravy Chips. We’re excited to participate in Fete this April through not one but two (!) events. First, join us on Thursday, April 4 alongside other local restaurants, designers, and artisans for the Fete Night Market from 5:30–10 p.m. at 1520 West Fulton Street. Then find our very own Art Jackson on Saturday, April 6 from 2–4 p.m. as he joins Ed Marszewski (Maria’s, Co-Prosperity Sphere) in the discussion Bridgeport Rising, about the past and future of the neighborhood we are happy to call home. Moderated by Chicagoist editor and all-around great guy Chuck Sudo, Bridgeport Rising will take place at the Co-Prosperity Sphere, 3219–21 South Morgan Street. (Sorry, tickets are sold out for the April 6 tour of the vertical farm facility The Plant, but if you’ve got yours, you can see where we do some of our farming and production.)

Our Pies in Your ’Hood

We continue to count our lucky stars for the lovely local shops that stock our Royal Pies. The list of retailers is on our food and drink page here (scroll to the bottom). We’re happy to announce two new places where you can find our goodies:

Coffee Alley: A new Taylor Street coffee shop that carries our Royal Fiver pies, great for a light meal, including our popular Britalian pizza-style variety
Irv and Shelly’s Fresh Picks: A wonderful store offering local delivery of independently produced, organic and local foods, located in Niles, Ill.
Remember: You can have our fully baked, frozen pies shipped to your doorstep via the online specialty grocer Artizone (delivering throughout the Chicago area, including suburbs). Through the end of May, receive free shipping and 50 percent off your first order (first-time customers only). Promo code: pleasanthouse

Pleasant Farms Report

In summary: seeding and planting…and seeding and planting. Look for more produce from our Pleasant Farms very soon. We’re still looking for farm interns. If you know of a serious candidate who is interested in farming as a career, especially someone enrolled in a relevant academic program and who can apply work with us toward a degree, please contact us at Information about our spring volunteer days at the farm is coming soon.
