Cecilia Bengolea & François Chaignaud

After challenging the usual repertoires of bigger companies Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and Lyon Opera Ballet with their fresh and experimental edge, dynamic duo Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud have now mashed together Jamaican dancehall, ballet and medieval polyphonic singing in the truly unique DFS.

Capturing the global phenomenon of dancehall, the team have invited dancers from Jamaica to work with them to bring it to the Sadler’s Wells stage, alongside some ballet dancers and their dog (resident ‘good boy’, Roy).

Another prominent part of the performance is the live singing. They perform one of the oldest forms of medieval polyphonic singing, essentially really old love songs, to counter the vibrant dancehall rhythms.

A challenge to hierarchies and what we consider ‘high art’, DFS is original, provocative and lots of fun. You won’t want to miss it.

DFS is at Sadler's Wells, Rosebery Avenue London EC1R on 23 & 24 April.
