WINDRUSH: Movement of the people
70 years after the Empire Windrush docked, marking the start of Caribbean migration to the UK, comes a new work from Phoenix’s artistic director Sharon Watson with a newly commissioned score by Gary Crosby.
This exciting new contemporary dance piece focuses the story on the first Jamaican people who came to Britain. Beginning with the departure of the SS Empire Windrush, the dance piece captures the travellers’ first glimpse of Tilbury Docks, and recreates the iconic images of them filing off the gang plank. They could not have envisaged the impact their journey would have on the social and cultural fabric of the UK.
Also featured on this bill is Calyx, a new piece by company dancer Sandrine Monin and composer Roberto Rusconi, inspired by Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal (Flowers of Evil), and Christopher Bruce’s family drama: Shadows.
Windrush will be performed at The Peacock from 26 – 28 April.
