Malawi's President, Her Excellency Dr Joyce Banda, endorses project

Ruth Markus, AMECA's founder and CEO, met with President Joyce Banda in London. During a very interesting and surprisingly lengthy discussion, Dr Banda expressed great enthusiasm for AMECA's intention to construct a new healthcare clinic in the Lower Shire region of southern Malawi. AMECA is very honoured to have received an official endorsement of this project; the charity wishes to express profound gratitude for all the time and interest that Dr Banda so generously gave to Ruth.

Update from Malawi

We are really pleased that the new Not for Profit Company, AMECA Healthcare Malawi Limited, has received its certificate of incorporation in Malawi. Excellent progress has been made on the transfer of 20 acres of land donated by The Traditional Authority under a 99 year lease, which is now in the final stages of approval with the Lands Ministry. Draft architect plans and broad quantity surveyor costs have been produced. Now the real work begins with fundraising for Phase 1 of this project.

A regular donation of just £20 a month with gift aid provides £300 a year to the charity. This could fund:
  • A matron's salary for a month
  • A medical assistant's salary for 2 months
  • A state enrolled nurse for 2 months
  • A patient attendant's salary for almost 5 months
Please take a moment to consider if you could manage a small regular donation to the charity, which will be so very much appreciated.

LAST: Links in Africa for Surgical Training

LAST is a surgical group founded by Surrey surgeons, in response to an invitation from Malawi College of Medicine in Blantyre, to send surgical teams primarily to support and mentor clinical officer trainees and general surgeons in essential and emergency surgical care in district general hospitals.

Malawi currently has only 15 surgeons for approximately 15 million people. Outside of major cities, surgery is performed by clinical officers, in the absence of surgeons. Recent studies have suggested the proportion of deaths that may be averted through access to timely surgical care in sub-Saharan Africa is as high as 25-30%.

Donations to LAST will help to fund this vital initiative and will also contribute to the work of AMECA.

Scotland Malawi Partnership

AMECA is really pleased to have been accepted as a member of the Scotland Malawi Partnership

AMECA also attended its first SMP forum held at Strathcylde University, which provided a fantastic opportunity to network on the topic of sustainable water solutions in southern Malawi. The forum included Government of Malawi representatives from the Ministry of Water Development and Irrigation and proved a graphic account of the challenges of disease faced by communities in this area.

A possible solution for pure water at the clinic?

Lack of available clean water and sanitation is responsible for much of the diseases seen in rural areas in Malawi and access to clean water is of paramount importance. A visit to Atlantic Water in Scotland provided the opportunity to view an innovative freshwater generator, powered by solar energy. This could provide an energy efficient pure water solution for the clinic.
