Athletes of the Month

June 2016
Avery Malone - Equine Vaulting

June 16, 2016
Avery is 15 years old and attends grade 9 at St. Marguerite School in Innisfail, AB. Avery is an Equestrian Vaulter with the Meadow Creek Vaulting Club based out of Olds, AB. (Vaulting can simply be explained as gymnastics and dance performed on and in harmony with a moving horse.) Avery has been competing in Equestrian Vaulting for 7 years. This past weekend, Avery competed in Blackfalds, finishing 4th in Women’s Canter “B”, and 1st in the Team Competition. This past April, Avery traveled to Gilroy, California to compete where she finished 6th in Junior 1 Star. Avery is coached by Jeanine and Angelique van der Sluijs, both of whom were former ASDC-Central athletes. Avery is one of the strongest athletes in the ASDC-Central Athlete Enhancement Program. Her strong work ethic combined with her athletic gifts and her training experiences with ASDC-Central will only see her continue to grow and develop in her athletic career! Congratulations Avery!

"So you want to be “Legendary”

I rarely watch television advertisements. I surf other programs, read and sometimes work on my computer when commercials are on. However, I was captured by Stella – Stella Artois.  I was intrigued by the conclusion of a Stella Artois advertisement where the actor stated, “Be Legend”.  The ad reminded me of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho where the traveler, Santiago, is encouraged to fulfill his personal legend, to follow his dreams.

Related, is the movie, The Dead Poet’s Society.  The late Robin Williams, as Mr. Keating is orienting his students to his course on literature and has the students listen to a few lines (below) from the poem,  To The Virgins, To Make Much of Time (Robert Herrick, 1591-1674) and he asks the students what the author is trying to say.

“Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying”.
