Congratulations to former AEP athlete, Katie Hendrickson (Spruce View) who has been named to Canada’s U21 Women’s Canoe Polo Team. The team was selected after a recent training camp in Edmonton, AB. The team will train out of Alberta to prepare for the ICF Canoe Polo World Championships taking place in Syracuse, Italy this August 29 to September 4.
New AEP athlete, Casey Patsula of the Red Deer Exelta Gymnastics Club took top honours in her category in the Edmonton Capital City competition last weekend. Casey finished first overall in the level 8 category with a first-place finish on the bars and was third, fifth and eight, respectively, in the beam, vault and floor exercises.

Preparation, Intention and Vigilance as
Keystone Habits of Achievers:

Habits are often as much a curse as a benefit. “The problem with habits is the brain cannot tell the difference between a good and a bad habit” (Amy Graybiel)
Habit is the root word for habitual. Habitual behaviour is behaviour completed without thought; the behaviour is on auto-pilot (automatically). Tying your shoes, stopping at red lights and brushing your teeth are behaviours that have been mastered by most 16 year olds. They have become automatic. For most of us our morning routine (habit) is on auto-pilot. We do it without thinking and it gets us off to school, work or play. We do them at the right time, in the right place, for the right reason.
We all have many habits (routines) that enable us to efficiently get our routine “stuff” done. Routine actions only need to get done; their completion enables us to get to events and activities that require higher order skills such as problem solving. Forty (40) percent of daily actions are not decisions but habits (Duke University, cited by Duhigg).. As athletes we have habits (routines) for suiting up for the game. Few of us have habits for preparing for practice (training). Fewer of us have habits or routines for “being in the competition”. It is the very rarest of us who have the habit of evaluating “objectively” our performance after a competition. Training, pre-competition, competition and post-competition are the four most dominant domains of an athlete.

2016 Alberta Winter Games in Medicine Hat
February 13-16, 2016
More than 2,700 participants, their families and spectators will be in Medicine Hat at the Alberta Winter Games in mid-February. Opening Ceremonies are February 13 at the Canalta Center. Alberta's best young athletes, from 11- 17 years of age will compete in skiing, hockey, biathlon, curling, speed skating, fencing, artistic gymnastics, volleyball, boxing and more.
