This month our focus is on health and beauty.
Many thanks to Bliss Sister, Jessilynn Gilbank, for offering an amazing yoga practice at her studio, asanaFIT, in San Clemente, CA where we experienced the wonderful benefits (mental and physical) of Power Vinyasa Flow Yoga. Namaste to all the fellow Bliss Sisters who did exceptionally well in class...remember, focus on what you can do rather than what you can't. It was so much fun to have a field trip where we all pushed ourselves physically and broke a sweat, or as I like to say "glistened".

Another beautiful Bliss Sister, Caprice Johnson, shared with us her vast knowledge of skincare treatments, remedies and rituals. Yes, well, looking youthful doesn't come with a handbook, so, getting this great advice from Caprice will be helpful as we hope and pray that we age gracefully. She is a great example as her skin is amazing and ageless! 


As summer approaches, be mindful of taking good care of yourself. Be sure to schedule in regular exercise, get plenty of rest, drink lots of water, and wear your sunscreen when you play outside. Summer is a great season to try something new, to escape or just dream.

The practice of yoga has many health benefits associated with it but beyond the internal and physical benefits, Jessilynn finds it as "an opportunity every time I step onto my mat to remember and get closer to my true self and the divine within me. Because of yoga, I am more conscious and aware of the powerfully amazing being of energy that I am."

A few of the many benefits of yoga...
  1. Blood pressure. A consistent yoga practice decreases blood pressure through better circulation and oxygenation of the body. Inversions and Rhythmic Breathing especially.
  2. Pulse rate. A slower pulse rate indicates that your heart is strong enough to pump more blood with fewer beats. Regularly practicing yoga provides a lower pulse rate.
  3. Circulation. Yoga improves blood circulation. By transporting nutrients and oxygen throughout your body, yoga practice provides healthier organs, skin, and brain.
  4. Respiratory. Like the circulatory system, a lower respiratory rate indicates that the lungs are working more efficiently. Yoga decreases the respiratory rate through a combination of controlled breathing exercises and better fitness.
  5. Cardiovascular endurance. A combination of lower heart rate and improved oxygenation to the body (both benefits of yoga) results in higher cardiovascular endurance.

Your skin is affected by three proponents:

Genetics - of course this means if your mom has good skin, you will probably have good skin as well. Lucky are those who carry these good genes and will look great no matter what.

Habits - including how much sun you get, what you eat, if you smoke, how often you wash your face, exercise, overall how well you take care of yourself. Caprice recommends first and foremost to always wear sunscreen. SPF 30 is best and actually anything over that is not necessarily better. Eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water will help to hydrate and repair your skin. Minimizing stress is key to looking younger. You can wear your stress on your face. Worry and tension can manifest into wrinkles or dark spots.

Treatments - this includes products used to help eliminate any number of issues you may have with your skin ie: acne, wrinkles, dark spots, rosacea, dry patches, etc. Try to use Pharma Grade products versus products that are usually found in department or drug stores. Pharma Grade products meet the requirements of pharmaceuticals and typically have been researched and tested extensively.  The ingredients are really what to look for in any of your skin care products. You should look for "active" ingredients. See this article from the Cleveland Clinic on understanding some active ingredients in skin care products. Caprice says to save money, spend less on your cleanser and moisturizer and put your dollars towards your treatment. At the end of the day every skin type is different so whatever works for you, stick with it.
