A NOTE FROM OUR NEW PRESIDENT

  Leadership Change at makingCHANGE

It's been a few months since our previous leader, Michelle Glassburn, handed the ball off to me to carry on makingCHANGE's mission.  I was fortunate to have been a volunteer with makingCHANGE for a few months before Michelle announced that she would be relocating with her family this past summer.  The two month transition period with Michelle after the Board selected me to succeed her was invaluable as I learned about Michelle's many roles and responsibilities.

I had always kidded Michelle about being the face of makingCHANGE and now, suddenly, there is a new face at the helm.  There is always concern and uncertainly in any organizaton when the leadership changes.  The important message is that there is no change in makingCHANGE's mission.  My immediate goal is to continue the programs that were previously established and identify other people and organizations in the community that can benefit from our programs.

It's also helpful to know a little bit about a new leader.  I've been a Howard County resident for 24 years that have included time as an HCYP baseball and basketball coach and a Centennial Boosters Board member.  My two children both attended Howard County Public Schools with my son now in his senior year of college and my daughter a freshman in college.  My professional experience includes 20 years in corporate finance before becoming a Certified Financial Planner
and working for 8 years with indivduals and families to achieve their financial goals.

I am excited about the opportunities that are ahead for makingCHANGE and committed to the mission of providing financial education programs to the community.  I appreciate your continued support.

Thanks, Mike

makingCHANGE @ Howard Community College

makingCHANGE geared up for Back-to-School at Howard Community College (HCC) this past summer with two new programs for students.

The first program provides one-on-one financial coaching and financial workshops to students through the Career Links programs.  This program assists HCC students who are low-income single parents or displaced homemakers to achieve college success.  The financial coaching and workshops are funded by the Maryland Access Challenge Grant received by HCC from the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

The second program, offered by the Office of Student Life, is makingCHANGE's Saving makes CENT$ program which is an eight-week program focused on students establishing budgets and identifying ways to save money and plan for their financial goals.

There will also be a Y-Fi Youth Finance event held at HCC on October 24th exclusively for HCC students.  This financial simulation, in partnerhsip with Junior Achievement, involves students moving through 17 different stations that require the students to make financial decisions while attempting to balance their budget.

Seminars for Grassroots

makingCHANGE received a grant from the TJX Foundation to fund the continuation of monthly seminars at the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center. The seminars, open to all residents of the shelter, cover a variety of financial topics including budgeting, understanding credit and identity theft. The group seminars provide a general overview of each topic with one-on-one financial coaching available to those who are interested to address their specific situation.

Community Service Partnership Grant
Awarded to makingCHANGE

The Fiscal Year 2013 budget for the Howard County Government included a Community Service Partnerships (CSP) Grant for makingCHANGE. The CSP grant provides funding for makingCHANGE to host a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site at the North Laurel Multi-Service Center for the upcoming tax season. This program provides free income tax preparation for people who make $50,000 or less and need help with preparing their taxes. This initiative helps to ensure that taxpayers receive tax credits for which they qualify such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The CSP grant also funds one-on-one financial coaching at the North Laurel Multi-Service Center and financial seminars for human service organizations in Howard County.
