#GivingTuesday™ is a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations.
The idea for Giving Tuesday, a new concept being promoted for Tuesday, November 27, 2012, began simply enough. There is one day a year set aside for giving thanks (Thanksgiving) and two days for shopping deals (Black Friday and Cyber Monday). Why not set aside one day a year during the holiday season, Giving Tuesday, for giving back to your local community?
Non-profit organizations, including makingCHANGE, rely upon individual donations to support their mission throughout the year. According to Giving USA, a report compiled annually by the American Association of Fundraising Counsel, individuals represented 73% of all contributed dollars in 2011. The median for an individual's total annual contribution in Howard County, MD was $2,962 based upon 2008 IRS data, according to the How America Gives study by the Chronicle of Philanthrophy. People are continuing to give to support what they value and believe in.
The challenge for every individual is identifying which nonprofits to donate to each year. I expect that your mailbox looks very similar to mine as we begin another holiday season. A variety of worthy causes including food banks, health-related campaigns and colleges, just to name a few, have sent me their donation requests during this season of giving and year-end charitable contributions. It's also important at this time of year - whether it's gift buying or making donations - that you don't spend more than what's in your budget.
Please take a moment during this Giving Tuesday to identify a nonprofit, if you haven't already done so, that would benefit from your contribution of either time or money or both. Your support of makingCHANGE's mission to provide financial education and coaching to individuals who are working towards achieving self-sufficiency would be appreciated, also. A donation of $50 provides one coaching session to a single parent learning how to provide for his or her family. A $200 donation supports a financial education session to a group of indivduals who are saving towards the purchase of their first home.
Please visit our website at www.makingchangecenter.org to learn more about our mission. You can make a donation to makingCHANGE by clicking on the "Donate Now" button at the top of this email.
Best wishes to you and your family for a happy holiday season!

Training and certification for volunteer tax preparers are offered free and sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service. No prior tax preparation or accounting experience is required. TAKE THE Y-FI CHALLENGE: PUT YOUR MONEY SKILLS TO THE TEST!
Join makingCHANGE and Junior Achievement of Central Maryland for Y-Fi, a Youth Finance event, on Saturday, January 26, 2013, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at Howard Community College. This free activity is designed for youth ages 12-18 and their parents or guardians. Drop in for a 60-90 minute, “real life” simulation of financial planning, goal setting and decision making experiences.
During this interactive event, students will:
· Receive a career, find out how much the job pays, and stretch their paychecks to cover all of their expenses.
· Go “shopping” and stick to a budget as they make choices on transportation, housing, utilities, food, clothing and much, much more!
· Watch out for an “Unlucky Chance” card which could wreak havoc on their monthly budget.
Younger students will gain an appreciation of the tough financial choices adults have to make each day. Older students will learn how career, education and spending choices can have a direct impact on their success. Families will learn how to support each other in making earning, spending and saving choices.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance:
makingCHANGE is hosting Howard County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site throughout the 2013 tax season. Like other VITA sites across the country, the Howard County site will offer free tax assistance preparation to most taxpayers who earned up to $50,000 in 2012. In addition to free tax return preparation, the site will offer free electronic filing, savings bonds and the option to receive refunds via direct deposit onto a debit card. Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper — even faster, when tax refunds are deposited directly into a bank account.
