Writing for a Cure!

WAVES, and MEDx are sponsoring Writing for a Cure in honor of World AIDS Day. The purpose of this event is to spread awareness about both HIV/AIDS and for the HIV Here + Now project. The HIV Here + Now project was started by award-winning poet and HIV activist Michael Broder. He is collecting pieces of poetry and prose and compiling them into a printed anthology as well as posting one piece a day on the website until June 5th, 2016 (this will mark 35 years of AIDS in our country).

The Student Media professional staff is pleased to announce that our very own Leslie Steiger has accepted a new full-time position as the Fiscal and Operations Assistant Director for our office!

Leslie has been with Student Media since her undergraduate sophomore year (2010) and served in multiple positions including Communication Team Leader and Business Manager.

Student Media's Thanksgiving Feast
This past Friday, Student Media hosted a Thanksgiving Feast to honor and celebrate our outstanding staff. Rodger Smith, WGMU's Faculty Advisor, had this to say about the event: Student Media's Thanksgivng celebration was "everybody enjoying a traditional meal and watching Mason vs. Oklahoma State. Just like Thanksgiving Day...only its basketball."

Media Opportunities
Junto Magazine Junto Magazine is looking for artists, authors, musicians, or anybody with a passion for creativity to submit original works for publication in the inaugural issue of this exciting new magazine. Join a community of artists and build your professional portfolio while sharing your passion. Junto is a brand new, web-based magazine that provides a professionally cultivated, cross-medium creative outlet for trained amateur artists on a monthly basis. Junto was created by local writers and artists, including Student Media alumna Nicole Wisenhahn, class of 2011. Deadline for inclusion in the premiere issue is November 30th. WREX-TV 13 in Rockford, IL  Student Media alumnus Reuben Jones reached out to let us know that there are a number of job openings available (or opening soon) at the NBC affiliate in Rockford, IL where he works as a reporter. Click here to learn more about those opportunities.

The Capital Speakers Club of Washington, D.C. is offering a $7,500 scholarship to a female undergraduate student majoring in speech, communication, or the equivalent, at an institution of higher learning in the greater Washington, D.C. area. The scholarship is to be paid directly to the recipient's university for their continued studies in Speech, Communications, or the equivalent. The Capital Speakers Club was founded in 1951 and consists of distinguished women who are active in professional, cultural, civic, diplomatic, and social activities in the Washington, D.C. area.

'Tis the season to be scouting out and applying for internships. To help you with your search, the folks over at Poynter have put together a list of 80 (and growing) internship and fellowship opportunities with a media focus. The list includes large and small media organizations from across the country, but luckily our area is home to some of the best in the field (USA Today, The Washington Post, Politico, Chronicle of Higher Education, and DC bureaus of other national papers and networks).
