Student Media Hosts Chinese Journalists

Representatives from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and Fourth Estate met with eight journalists and media professionals from China on Wednesday, March 29th as a part of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Through the help of three interpreters, the open discussion was wide-ranging and included everything from personal stories to the role and freedoms of journalists in China vs. the U.S. to the universal power of the media and the need for ethical reportage, regardless of country.

The meeting “provided me with new insight into the importance of media around the world. It was great to be able to hear how those in the media cover China and the U.S. from a non-American perspective,” said
AJ Blomberg, SPJ Events Coordinator.

The visitors praised the Office of Student Media, and though they grew up differently, they said that we reminded them of themselves when they were just beginning their careers.

“It was great to hear and witness their excitement for our future in media,” added AJ.

Topics of freedom, ethical challenges, and passion for storytelling were all discussed in the almost 2-hour meeting.

“I was surprised at how easy it was to have great conversation with them, despite speaking through interpreters and being from two different sides of the world. Our shared love for journalism and curiosity connected us instantly,” said
Fareeha Rehman, SPJ President.

Student Media representatives in attendance:
Natalia Kolenko from Fourth Estate, and Lauryn Cantrell, Cat Amin, Aurora Pasos, AJ Blomberg, and Fareeha Rehman from SPJ. Faculty advisors Jason Hartsel and Rodger Smith joined as well.
