What Happened Over Break?

"Everyone always assumes that 'nothing is happening' over breaks, but
that is simply not true." David Carroll

Here is a chronological look at just some of the exciting stuff that happened at Student Media while most of Mason was on vacation:
SPJ Meets the Press: Just before break on December 4th, members of Mason's chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists attended a live taping of NBC's Meet the Press in Washington, D.C. and got a behind-the-scenes look at how media professionals, including host Chuck Todd, do their job.
School of Dance Live Stream: Students from Mason Cable Network produced a live stream of a Studio Series performance hosted by Mason's School of Dance on December 12th. Photo courtesy of School of Dance.
Holiday Book Fair: Robbie Maakestad and Doug Luman (pictured above) represented Phoebe at the Bethesda Writer's Center's annual Holiday Book Fair alongside other local small press publishers on December 17th.
So to Speak Blog: Assistant Blog Editor Madeleine Wattenberg posted an interview with poet Oliver Baez Bendorf on January 3rd. Click here to read the full interview at
Live Sports Broadcasting: Students from WGMU and MCN produced live coverage of more than a dozen athletic games over the break including wrestling and men's and women's basketball. Check out MCN's YouTube video highlight below for an amazing three-point shot by Kara Wright that forced the game into overtime against GW on January 11th.
George Mason Forces Overtime with Comeback in Final Minutes
Trailing 57-50 with 84 seconds left in the game, George Mason uses an incredible comeback capped by a clutch Kara Wright three-pointer (3:03), to force overtime against the George Washington Colonials. George Washington would go on to win 79-71 in OT. Dan Ward on the call.
Winter Orientation: Lottye Lockhart (pictured above) and Mimi Albano represented Student Media at early morning sessions of Winter Orientation on January 18th and 19th.

Podcast Assistant/Coordinator:
The George Mason Institute for Immigration Research (IIR) is interested in starting a podcast. This would highlight their program through interviews, information and more. The IIR needs a person to coordinate their podcast effort. The Podcast Coordinator creates, develops and produces podcasts. The student in this position would record interviews and edit and process the podcast. This person would also help upload the content to social media (iTunes, for example). The person in this position will need a significant amount of past experience in audio production. This position does not require specific training if the individual possesses the ability to produce quality and creative podcasts in a timely fashion. The student would use the WGMU Johnson Center studio to produce the podcast, including interviewing guest in studio or on the phone.
If you are a Communications major, you could receive Comm 452 credit, provided you qualify. You could receive academic credit in your major, if it is not Communications. You could also volunteer your time; in any event, you would earn much needed experience for your resume.
This is for Spring semester 2017, so the process for approval must happen quickly (preferably by Thursday, January 26). Please contact Prof. Rodger Smith at if you are interested. If you are not interested, please forward to a person who would qualify and/or have interest in this project.
