Creative women
August 2017

Business is creativity

One of my favourite writers is the Czechoslovakian great Milan Kundera. His quote that “business has only two functions – marketing and innovation,” for me means he values creativity as an essential part of business, because both marketing and innovation require original thinking of a creative kind. (Kundera also said “you can understand nothing about art, particularly modern art, if you do not understand that imagination is a value in itself,” but that’s a discussion for another day.)

What made me think about creativity in business is a recent interview with Phil Thomas, CEO of the remarkable UK events company Ascential Events. The biggest event Phil manages is the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, formerly simply known as the Cannes Lions, a marketing festival that hands out awards, mainly for advertising creativity.

My fellow Toaster Kim Browne and I know Phil from our days in the magazine world. We were privileged that he served on our board and we spent many entertaining and interesting hours in his company.

It’s a girl thing

The Toast remains busy-ness personified, but it would be counter culture for us not to have something to celebrate! Since August’s theme is women’s month I thought it fitting to spotlight the incredibly talented women who make up half of our design team.

Angela is our very own design angel – who can take the ugly out of anything with her magic design wand, no matter the medium. Angela brings a breath of fresh air to the agency, is always incredibly client-friendly, has a thing for olives and has a latent talent for DJing awesome tunes for the Toasters on Friday afternoons. Fiercely loyal and beautiful inside and out, we feel like we’ve known Angela our whole lives, but in truth we’ll celebrate two years of working together in just a few months.

Sharlene is our little gem, who knows her way around a print catalogue like no other. She is also an ace website designer and clients love working with her. Sharls heads up our social committee and is responsible for ensuring work is fun @ The Toast. She has an irrepressible passion for our business and is always first in line to take on new responsibilities.

The history of National Women's Day
The South African public holiday celebrated every year on 9 August is National Women's Day. The significance of the date is that is falls on the day 20 000 women marched on the Union Buildings to protest the apartheid regime's discriminatory pass laws in 1956.

Today during the whole month of August the wonderful role of women in society is celebrated in many different ways. The unique issues faced by women are highlighted and awareness is created to advance the appreciation of women by everyone in the country.
