Bendigo to Host the U18 National Championships

In a first for Lacrosse and Regional Victoria, Lacrosse Victoria has taken the historic step of appointing the Bendigo Lacrosse Association to host the 2014 Australian Lacrosse Association U/18 National Championships at the Epsom Huntly Reserve from April 18th to April 21st.

The event will see nearly 200 participants and officials from across Australia and New Zealand descend upon Bendigo as the sports up and coming stars display their skills.
In making the announcement Lacrosse Victoria General Manager, Rod Kimmitt was buoyant at the opportunity to grow the game in Bendigo. “We often hear of Lacrosse being described as ‘sports best kept secret’. We are determined to change that and grow the game in new markets” He added “The support of the Victorian Government and the City of Greater Bendigo has been critical in allowing us to bring this showcase event to Bendigo exposing Lacrosse to a new audience”

Minister Delahunty said the Victorian Coalition Government is proud to support the U/18 National Championships with a $5,000 Significant Sporting Events Program grant.
“We’re proud to support event organisers Lacrosse Victoria to bring this important event to regional Victoria. Events like the U/18 National Championships inspire more people to get more active, more often, and provide a significant boost to local sport, tourism and investment.”Mr Delahunty said.

Australian Lacrosse Association (ALA) President Mike Slattery supported the comments of Minister Delahunty and Mr Kimmitt adding “The ALA applauds Lacrosse Victoria’s efforts at developing and promoting the sport of Lacrosse in Country Victoria through their staging of the 2014 Australian Lacrosse Association u/18 National Championships”

“Their teaming with the City of Greater Bendigo, along with Victorian Government assistance will ensure a wonderful lacrosse experience for all participants and supporters”
City of Greater Bendigo Major Events Manager Terry Karamaloudis says “For Lacrosse Victoria to stage these National Championships in Bendigo is another positive endorsement for Bendigo and the quality facilities we have in this city. You just don’t win national competitions by chance or luck, you have to have the facilities, the personnel, the knowhow and the willingness to stage significant events like this, and Bendigo has the lot”

As well as crowning both a boys and girls National champion, the event will also act as a key component of squad selection for the upcoming 2015 Women’s U/19 World Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland and the 2016 Men’s U/19 World Championships in Coquitlam, Canada ensuring fierce competition. Widely known as ‘the fastest game on two feet’, with over 1 million participants, Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in North America with players and spectators alike drawn to the fast paced, physical, yet skillful nature of the game.

Catch up with the 2014 Aus Men's Squad

The 2014 Australian Men's Squad travelled to Dimboola, Victoria for the final camp before they head overseas to take on the Japanese National Team in February. Read all about how they overcame the heat and bushfires to have a very successful camp in country Victoria from Marty Hyde, Luke Keesing and Thomas Graham.

After driving the community bus to a few pick up points around Melbourne, first one being Rubbers house in Murrumbeena and the second being the McDonalds on the Ring Road to pick up the westside boys we were on our way to Dimboola! The fourth consecutive day of being 40 plus degrees, the hottest week ever recorded in Melbourne, there were bound to be fires throughout the state. Sure enough they were all conveniently located around Dimboola! So we were skeptical whether we would be able get through to Dimboola as roads were closing due to the fires. We were all on our phones and thanks to technology these days we were guided on several detours via the CFA website. With the coaches an hour ahead we always had the heads up on which roads to take. Some roads were bumpy and had us holding on for our lives, but we discovered it was just JTs undesirable driving. We finally arrive into Dimboola not knowing what to expect, and we were more than pleased with the state-of-the-art astro turf and facilities that stood before us. We were then introduced to our accommodation, concentration camp style but 5 star. Well maybe 4 star. Fully air conditioned left us with a sigh our relief. It was going to be an interesting sleep, especially knowing the SA and WA boys were arriving in at 1am and knowing they were going to wake us up! All I can say is team moral is high after one night!
