Commodore's Comments

Well Christmas is upon us, and it looks like the weather is going to do its part this year.
Christmas is about spending time with family and friends, whether on land or the sea.
However the holidays do not mean taking a holiday from acting responsibly, especially on the water. Please remember to check the weather forecast before you set out, ensure someone on land knows your movements, expected return time and that have you completed all the necessary maintenance on your vessel.

If staying on land, the Club will be open as usual across the holidays, except for Christmas Day.
On behalf of the Committee and management of the Club, we wish you a safe, happy and relaxed holiday season.
Have a great Christmas and New Year, keep it safe and have fun!

Coastguard Mana Update

Well here we are at the end of another year. Summer has come early and let’s hope it will continues over the holiday period.
Just a reminder there are 5 very simple rules to make sure you stay safe on the water this summer:
  1. Lifejackets- Take them & wear them, especially on vessels under 6 m in length. They can sink very quickly. Wearing a lifejacket significantly improves your survival time in the water.
  2. Skipper Responsibility – The skipper is responsible for the safety of all on board  and for the safe operation of the boat. Stay within the limits of your vessel and your own experience.
  3. Communications – Two separate waterproof ways of communicating so we can help you if you get into difficulty.
  4. Marine Weather – New Zealand’s weather can be very unpredictable. Check the local marine forecast before you go and expect that these conditions can change.
  5. Avoid Alcohol – Safe boating and alcohol do not mix. Wait until you are back onshore or on a safe mooring before indulging.
Make sure your boat is properly and regularly maintained, has the right safety gear and if it has a motor sufficient fuel. One third to get there, one third to get back and one third just in case!!
Good mobile coverage can be uneven in remote areas. For emergency communications use your VHF radio on channel 16.
Make sure your 406Mhz distress beacon is current and registered.

On 31 December at 1300 hours to 1600 hours Coastguard New Zealand will be running their “old for new” lifejacket promotion at the Club. Full details of this promotion are on the Coastguard NZ website.  Come along & get your existing lifejackets checked and replaced at a big discount if they are not up to scratch.

Happy & safe boating.

Sailing news

Plimmerton Boating Club are  thinking  of copying the Hebtro challenge.  In case you are not familiar it is a keeler race where Wellington yacht owners and their core crew take out business teams for a casual Mark Foy race.  There is usually a celebrity guest speaker on one of the yachts who, by custom, wins the race.  The Business owners pay $$$ for the privilege and are asked to donate an item for the auction following the race.  Funds raised will go to the Youth Sailing at PLBC.

We are looking at doing the same with a race around Mana Island may be 24th or 25th March 2018, We  need to gauge the level of support we can get from our Sailors here at Mana.
Please contact me for further information or if you are willing to help.

From the Marina

Summer Cruising Time/Biosecurity
Recent weather has produced some good cruising days. December is already upon us so those vessel owners that want to cruise this summer should have already slipped or planned to slip their vessel for cleaning/antifouling.
The Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnership, (TOS) will again be checking vessels.
Results from last summer’s surveying;
·         Over 6 days, 187 vessels were surveyed
·         Regional breakdown in boat numbers was; Abel Tasman 74, Pelorus 33, Queen Charlotte 80
·         Twenty one vessels arrived from outside the TOS area, mainly from Mana Marina and a few from Seaview Marina
·         No new marine pests were found, and no Sabella, the Mediterranean fan worm.
That is excellent news

Mana Marina Projects
There are a number of large projects underway including some longer term conceptual ideas for the future benefit of the licence holders, vessel owners and the Marina.
To adequately keep interested parties up to date, we will be adding a dedicated page to our web site. The page is currently being designed and will include;
·         Potential re-configuration of A Pier
·         Mana Cruising Club’s long term plans to redesign the hardstand and facilities.

Live-Aboard Permits at Maximum
Would all licence holders note that the marina has reached the maximum permitted vessels for Live -Aboard status. If you are looking to occupy or rent your berth as a Live-Aboard, applications will be placed on a waiting list.

Diesel Refuelling Facility.
A reminder to vessel owners that our fuel operation is operated by Petroleum Logistics Limited. (PLPL).
PLPL offer Mobil, BP & Z cards that offer discounts for fuel at Mana Marina and can be used at service stations and other marine sites around New Zealand.
Contact the Marina Office for an application.

 Power Leads / Pedestals
Our monthly compliance check of leads plugged into pedestals reveals a large number of leads where the plug is not inserted correctly into the pedestal socket.
The plug must be fully inserted with the locking ring firmly locked onto the pedestal outlet. Failure to connect plug properly will lead to plug/socket burnout.

 Holiday Leave.
The marina office will be open Monday to Friday, normal hours 0830 to 1700 hours
We will be closed on the following statutory days and public holidays; Monday and Tuesday 25th & 26th December 2017 and Monday and Tuesday 1st and 2nd of January 2018.
Monday 22nd January 2018 (Wellington Anniversary).
Peter will be away inclusive 21 December 2017 back Friday 29th December 2017 (Neil will man office).
Neil will be away inclusive 29th December 2017 to 7th January 2018 (Peter will man office).

We wish everyone happy and safe boating.

Around the Yard

The yard has been flat out recently and is on top of our waiting list of boats coming out. We have had 96 boat movement's for Nov and Dec so far and still have room for Quick slips before Christmas. There are some empty cradles, large and XL available so for anything urgent, ring Colin.
Colin is away 30/31 Dec and on deck from 3rd January onwards.
Our aim is to have all lawns done, the boat ramp cleaned and the yard tidied prior to the Holidays.

Cheers from Col

The Yachtsman

The restaurant will be closed from Friday 22nd December to 7th January inclusive.
We have started to put away some frozen meals that can be purchased from us at a cost of $9 each. Stocks are limited and it might be pot luck as to what is in the freezer this week.  Please ask at the bar during the Christmas closed period for availability.  A  good idea for live - aboards or anyone who wants a quick meal for later.

Please keep sharing your feedback in person or via our email
