Upgrade everything now

It's always fun when Apple issues urgent security patches! By "fun" we of course mean the opposite. But the bad guys have been at work, they've found a hole (or several) in Apple's operating system security, and there's a good chance they've already begun exploiting the situation.

Now you are very, very unlikely to be the target of any of this. That said, we don't recommend that you leave your car unlocked when you park downtown, either. So you should update the Apple devices you own immediately.

Do the 12.5.1 update if you're running 12.x Monterey. If you're running Big Sur or Catalina, download and install the Safari 15.6.1 update. All of these can be found in System Preferences > Software Update.

Your iPhone should be running iOS 15.6.1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to confirm or to do this update. If your iPhone cannot run iOS 15, it's time to get a new iPhone. (Expect new iPhones to be announced in September.)

Like the iPhone, your iPad should be running iPadOS 15.6.1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to confirm or to do this update. If your iPad cannot run iPadOS 15, it's time to get a new iPad.

Update to WatchOS 8.7.1. It is unclear from Apple documentation if this is just a bug-fix or if there are security implications.

Also update Chrome and Zoom

Apple's not alone in the "this is really bad everybody needs to update right away" category. Both Google Chrome and Zoom have issued important security patches for their software. If you use either program, you should update immediately.
