Changes to MSS: It's all good

We're making some big changes the MacAtoZ Service Suite (MSS), our remote support program, but it's not just change for the sake of change. We hope you'll agree that every modification is a good one, bringing clarity or savings.
  • MSS Tier 1 is now called simply "Remote Support." It includes every feature it did before and at the same $49 a year price. "The MacAtoZ Service Suite" never really rolled off the tongue—in fact it rolled so poorly we had to abbreviate it to MSS—whereas if we mention our Remote Support program, people almost immediately have some idea of what we're talking about.
  • Remote Support now includes support for iOS devices like iPhone and iPad. Download TeamViewer for your iPhone or for your iPad from the App Store. This was formerly an MSS Tier 3 feature(!), but we're adding it to every Remote Support account. If you need remote help with your Apple device, be in Mac, iPhone, or iPad, now you can get it.
  • MSS Tier 2 is now called "Remote Support+" with the "plus" part of that indicating internet services. It remains $69 a year. Remote Support+ offers everything in "Remote Support" plus your own domain, email addresses, WordPress content management system, optional server installs, and so on. Many of the optional server installs were formerly MSS Tier 3 features.
  • MSS Tier 3 is gone. If you were MSS Tier 3, we've automatically moved you into Remote Support+ and we will be reaching out to you to set you up for the lowered annual price of $69. Basically, you get all the same features as before for $30 less which is our kind of awesome.
We've been calling our remote support program MSS since it started in 2008. Bear with us if we occasionally slip back into that terminology. We hope you'll agree all these changes are changes for the better.

MacAtoZ moves to new offices

After a wonderful 18 months or so at the Chemeketa's Center for Business and Industry (CCBI), MacAtoZ has moved to a new office building in South Salem. Located 2590 12th Place SE, the new office building provides about 1100 square feet of space—a significant upgrade over our suite in CCBI. We also have a garage should the mythical AppleCar ever come to fruition.

Speaking of cars, the parking for employees and clients is also significantly improved. At CCBI, employees were across the street and clients were required to park behind the building (if available), use metered parking, or park a block away. The new building has parking right out front.

We set moving day for July 30, a date decided weeks in advance. The comedy came in the form of 106 degree weather, the hottest day of the year and one of Salem's hottest days ever. Despite the sweltering conditions, a combination of Dynée, Ty, and Ty's family were able to get everything transferred by the end of the day without anyone collapsing. Poems will be written, songs will be sung.

The space we've moved into is still under construction, with trim, blinds, interior doors, and more still needing work. The conference room has even greater needs, so we're not properly set to meet with clients (by appointment only) at the building yet. Eventually this will be a real possibility, as will conducting classes.

Apple Sept. 9 event

One question we occasionally get is whether Apple shares any advanced word with us regarding what they will be announcing at their big media events. This is followed by many tears of laughter on our part. Apple shares nothing with nobody. We'll be tuning in to find out about new iPhones, iPads, AppleTVs, etc. just like everyone else. Here's more information on Apple's Live Stream. You'll also be able to watch a rebroadcast later in the day on Apple.com.

Now if you'd like our best shot-in-the-dark guess as to what Apple will introduce, we'll say new iPhones, new iPads, a new AppleTV, and a rollout schedule for OS X 10.11 El Capitan, iOS 9, and WatchOS 2.

Tip of the Day

The Option key is one of the more under-utilized keys on the keyboard. That's unfortunate, because it actually unlocks a lot of different, powerful possibilities. The easiest example is this: Within many programs (Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc.), go to the File menu then press the Option key on the keyboard and watch the menu change!

In the case of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, Option reveals the "Save As..." menu item. In Safari, it reveals "Close other tabs." In Finder, it changes all kinds of menu items. Every user's preferences are different, but you may find that using
the Option key allows you to do something you've always wanted to.
