First Sunday in Advent

Advent Collect

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious Majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal. Amen.

Advent Reflections

The 'O' Antiphons (The Great O's) are the verses sung before and after the Magnificat in the ancient office of Vespers during the last seven days of Advent, and have been sung in the Western Church at least since the sixth century.

These antiphons are prayers addressed to Jesus in the vocative case (‘O’) using seven of his messianic titles from the prophecy of Isaiah. They are: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Dayspring), O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations), O Emmanuel (O God with Us). The pattern of each is an invocation to Christ and then a petition beginning with the word 'veni' – come.

As part of a collaboration with the Parish of St Mary Magdalene the clergy have come together to offer short recorded reflections on four (highlighted above) of the Great O's, to be released on Youtube each week of Advent. Click HERE for the text of the first one.

Brian Draper's Advent Daily Email

"A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn..."

Brian writes: 'I've always adored those lines from the carol 'O Holy Night'. They evoke, for me, that surge of anticipation, yearning and wonder that can visit us, so stirringly, in Advent. And how we need a reason for our weary world to rejoice, this year!

From Tuesday 1st December Brian will send you a short e-mail reflection, first thing each morning (except Sundays), finishing on December 23rd - with a link to participants' on-going responses. Click HERE to register and subscribe - do not pay as we have paid already!

Registering Attendance  If you wish to apply for a Church School place at either Primary or Senior school levels there are currently two ways of registering attendance: If you watch and 'like' the Mass on Instagram each Sunday, then you will receive the attendance credit as if you were in church. Please also email the parish office in addition and you will receive a confirmation email in due course. And from next Sunday 6th December when you come to church you will need to attend and sign the Register at Sunday mass, as before.
St Mary's will be open for private prayer during Advent from 5.00pm to 5.30pm.
St Saviour's will re-start the midweek evening mass at 6.30pm this Wednesday.
Parish Christmas Charitable Giving  This year, due to COVID, we are unable to collect or send our usual donations of new or good quality second-hand toys to our two outreach missions (Friends or St Mary’s Hospital and YMCA Shelter for Women & Children).  HOWEVER, we are pleased to announce that we have arranged a Just Giving page to purchase children’s books for the Paediatric Department at St Mary’s Hospital. Please spread the word amongst friends and family to donate. Thank you.
The Big Christmas Carol Service is on Saturday 12th December at 6.00pm, hosted by the Royal School of Church Music and broadcast from All Saints' Church in Cambridge. Here is an opportunity to stand alongside communities and churches across the world. You can download music packs (including rehearsal tracks to help singers around the world to practice in their own time) and the order of service. Please click on the link for more details.
The New Parish Website will be live from next week - last minute glitches have prevented it from going 'live' over this weekend. Please take a look and tell us what you think, any (constructive!) criticism also would be appreciated - it's still a work in progress.
North Paddington Food Bank. During this period when the churches are closed, you can still make donations which can be brought to the Parish Office in St Saviour's Church, Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm. Please note they can only accept items in tins, jars or packets (no fresh food). If you prefer to give a monetary donation please click HERE
Paddington Places is a City of Westminster development strategy to transform the area between Royal Oak tube station and the Edgware Road tube stations, including the section of canal between Warwick Avenue and Paddington Basin, and the area around Paddington Green. The aim is to enable safe pedestrian and cycle movement, and to improve the quality of the public spaces. They are still collecting views from local residents until December 14th. Click HERE if you wish to add your comments or complete the survey.
