We all miss Nickel Creek tremendously but how can we deny such an accomplished artist her huge solo talent? After two years fronting her own band, hanging out with Jonathan Wilson and touring with Jackson Browne, Dawes and the Decemberists, ex-Nickel Creek singer/fiddler Sara Watkins’s second solo album, 2012’s Sun Midnight Sun, surprised as well as delighted critics. With its assertive stylistic range, souped-up classic pop, grungy rockouts and gritty electronic textures, Sun Midnight Sun also features guest spots from the likes of Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) and Fiona Apple and finally positions Sara Watkins as a serious solo Americana artist in her own right. Well done that girl.
