We are happy to announce Mat Kaplan Planetary Radio host and producer, will discuss the exciting news and information about Lightsail 2, at Starship Congress 2019: Bend Metal.

For more information about Mat please visit the really amazing site Planetary Society Radio and Podcast.
Lightsail 2 was launched by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy on June 25th, 2019 and opened its solar sails on July 23, 2019, becoming the first spacecraft to ever be propelled entirely by solar pressure.

Lightsail 2 is a 3U cubesat (10cm x 10cm x 30cm) capable of deploying a 32 sq meter (340 sq ft) solar sail.
Matt's Abstract Reads:

LightSail 2 and Solar Sailing

To sail through space driven by light alone. It’s neither as fanciful or as recent a concept as you might think. Johannes Kepler proposed it over 400 years ago, while the great Konstantin Tsiolkovsky worked out many of the details early in the 20th century.

But it wasn’t till The Planetary Society’s ill-fated 2005 attempt to launch Cosmos 1 that a mission was actually undertaken. The innovative IKAROS became the first successful solar sail, but a controlled rise in orbital apogee was not achieved till just a few weeks ago by the Society’s LightSail 2. The tiny, three-unit cubesat continues to revolve around the Earth, turning it’s 5.6 meter sail 90 degrees twice each orbit.

The story of this crowdfunded mission is almost as interesting as the potential it is demonstrating for propellant-free voyages across our solar system and perhaps beyond.
LIGHTSAIL 2: NEXT GEN SPACE EXPLORATION
LightSail is a crowdfunded solar sail project from The Planetary Society. The LightSail 2 spacecraft, launched 25 June 2019, is the first spacecraft in Earth orbit propelled solely by sunlight.
On 31 July 2019, LightSail 2’s officially raised its orbit by a measurable amount, showing that solar sailing is a viable means of propulsion for CubeSats—small, standardized spacecraft that are part of a global effort to lower the cost of space exploration.

CONFERENCE TOPICS
Starship Congress 2019: Bend Metal focuses on transformative business development which support the eventual construction of a Starship, by creating viable business opportunities today:

Day 1: Great Ideas
  • Ideas, concepts, early innovations, research in need of prototyping, product development and commercialization,
  • Startups in space, manufacturing or services industries, "new space" businesses sharing success stories, lessons learned, obstacles, marketing or funding needs or scalability challenges.
Day 2: Incubators, Business and Product Developers
  • Incubators for space, manufacturing or services seeking to bring innovations to market.
  • Project managers, product developers, marketing specialists, systems engineers, rapid prototyping companies.
  • Patent, intellectual property protection, product certifications, state and federal technology transfer agencies.
Day 3: Funding Groups
  • Angel and Venture capital groups.
  • Grants departments, State and Federal funding agencies.
  • Universities and Foundations with programs for funding research and development efforts.
At SC19 this year we will create an environment where we can share ideas and information and create relationships by pairing groups with needs and resources needed to move ideas forward: Bend Metal.

WHAT IS STARSHIP CONGRESS
Starship Congress 2013, Hilton Anatole, Houston, TX
Starship Congress 2015, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA
Starship Congress 2017, Hyatt Regency Monterey, CA
At Starship Congress we put the utmost emphasis on bringing people together in discussion on actions, research and initatives towards interstellar achievements. We commit to a Single-Track meeting, with consideration to people with accessibility and hearing disabilities.

We want you to enjoy your time and be sharp, sociable and well rested so we built in numerous breaks and "shake-it-off" events for conversations.

The outcome of this meeting will set the research priorities of our organization and will define our messaging for the next two years. We invite everyone to be a part of this process, because we understand that this is a Mission for all Humankind.

Thank you and see you in California!
