News on recent awards and current exhibits from Michael Knapstein Photography
A New Year is on the Horizon!
Thanks once again for your support of me and my work. Interest in my photography has continued to build momentum as the sun set on 2012 and rose on 2013. In recent months I have been fortunate enough to have both B&W and color work recognized by several of the world's most prestigious photography competitions.
“Winterscape” has quickly become one of my most award-winning photographs. In recent months it was selected for exhibits from coast-to-coast, including the PhotoMidwest: Seven State Juried Exhibit in Madison, the Coalition of Photographic Arts (CoPA) 6th Annual Midwest Juried Exhibition in Milwaukee (winning one of only five cash awards), the New York Center for Photographic Art (winning Honorable Mention) and is currently in the "Shades of Gray” exhibit at the Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon.
“Winterscape” joined another perennial favorite, “Before the Storm” as part of a series that received recognition in two important international competitions. The series won Honorable Mention in the Lucie Foundation’s Tenth Annual International Photography Awards where they were selected from more than 18,000 entries from 104 countries. The same images were also named finalists for the Black + White Magazine Photographer of the Year competition in England. As a solo image, “Before the Storm” was also selected for the Steenbock Gallery National Juried Exhibition in Madison.
The Photography Masters Cup (based in LA and London) is one of the world’s leading competitions for color photography. That’s why I was so delighted to have seven photographs recognized this year, including “View from Wawanissee Point” which won Honorable Mention in the Nature category. The competition received more than 8,500 entries from 86 countries.
Photographer’s Forum magazine  selected “Cross Country” as a finalist in their 32nd Annual Spring Photography Contest from among more than 12,000 photographs from over 60 countries. The photo was also published in the hardcover book Best of Photography 2012. A few months earlier it also received Honor Roll recognition in the 7th Annual International Spider Awards in London.
For years people have suggested that I visit Copper Falls State Park near Mellen, Wisconsin. I’m so glad I finally did! This image “Tyler Forks Cascade” taken on my  my first visit received First Place in the Copper Falls Photo Contest held by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
A trip to another Wisconsin State Park also proved to be fruitful -- this time it was spectacular Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island, near Bayfield, Wisconsin. The Friends of Wisconsin State Parks selected Summer at Big Bay State Park as one of 12 winners in their 2013 Calendar Photo Contest. If you see this beautiful calendar, be sure to check out the month of August!
The Wisconsin Office of Rural Health selected nine of my photographs as finalists and four as medal winners in a statewide photography contest. This image received the Gold Medal (and a cash prize) in the “Recreation” category. My images also received the Silver Medal and Bronze Medal in the “Small Town Life” category and the Silver Medal  in the “Landscape” category.
Gathering Waters Conservancy selected this photo, entitled "After the Burn" as the top image (and cash prize winner) in the "People Protecting Wisconsin" category of their annual photo competition.

I recently updated my website and added dozens of new images to the various galleries and portfolios.
