News on recent exhibitions and awards from      Michael Knapstein Fine-Art Photography
Spring is in the Air!
The ice and snow have finally melted and the sound of Sandhill Cranes can be heard in the distance. Spring is here at last! When it comes to my photography, the winter months proved to be anything but cold. Thanks to your continued support, photo sales for the first quarter of this year set an all-time record. It will be fun to see if this momentum continues through the rest of the year! Here is some news on recent exhibitions and awards.
EXHIBIT: "Wings & Water"! My image “Sandhill Crane Dance” was selected to be part of a national juried exhibition called “Wings & Water.” Juror Marla Brenner selected 2-D and 3-D work done by 49 artists from 22 different states. I am proud to be one of the few photographers in the exhibit, which is at the River Arts Center, 105 9th Street, Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. The exhibit runs until May 4thClick here for a nice WSJ article about the exhibit.

EXHIBIT: Overture Center! I was invited to participate in a unique exhibition entitled “After the End of the World: Memories of Popular Culture”. The exhibit is coordinated with a Forward Theater production called “Mr. Burns (A Post Electric Play)” which deals with how popular culture will be conveyed in a post-apocalyptic world. In response to this challenge, I created “Don’t take my Kodachrome Away” and referenced the famous Paul Simon song in my statement. The exhibit is in the Overture Center for the Arts and will run through April 24th. There will be a reception this Friday, April 8th after the first performance of the play. AWARD: Pollux Awards!  The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards (which is based in Kent, England) recognized 13 of my photographs in their 8th Annual Pollux Awards. The images were in the Fine Art, Landscape and Wildlife categories. The jurors reviewed more than 9,000 images from 42 countries. This image is from Gibraltar Rock near Lodi, Wisconsin.
AWARD: Masters Cup! I am honored to have five images recognized in the 9th Annual International Color Awards, also known as the "Photographers Masters Cup." It is the world’s largest competition exclusively for color photography. My photographs were selected from among more than 5,600 entries from 72countries. The image shown received Honorable Mention in the Americana category. Click here to see all of the winners.
Limited-Time Print Special from Michael Knapstein AWARD: Monochrome Awards! Two of my photographs were named Honorable Mention award-winners in the Monochrome Awards, which is based in London, England. They included "Picket Fence" in the Fine Art category and "Angry Eagle" (shown) in Wildlife. My work was chosen from among more than 7,200 photographs from 79 countries.
INSTALLATION: Brookdale Madison!  Located on the far west side of Madison, Brookdale is one of the premier senior living facilities in the area. I am delighted that they recently purchased eight of my photographs for their permanent collection. My images can be found thoughout the three-story complex, including this image from the UW Memorial Union Terrace which greets visitors at the front entrance.

INSTALLATION: Marina Condos!  If you have visited downtown Madison, you have no doubt noticed the Marina Condominiums, which shine like a giant silver statue on the shore of Lake Monona. I am proud to have two of my photographs added to the permanent collection of this luxury complex. To match the shiny exterior, the photos that now grace the front lobby were printed on sheets of aluminum.

INSTALLATION: Great Dane! Next time you visit the Eastside Great Dane Pub, but sure to look up and you'll see one of my photographs overhead. It is hard to miss, since it is 4 feet high and 27 feet long. The image is broken up into five pieces to wrap around a curved wall. And the canvas prints are backed with a special sound-absorbing material to help reduce noise.
