February Update

Looking ahead towards Spring as a time for new beginnings and growth, we've tailored our activity to help our members find new partners, projects and prosperity.

With our next edition of UK Lifescience Industry magazine in development and an exciting events programme lined up, there are plenty of ways to engage with new contacts.

This month, we've had 7 new organisations join MediWales. Our membership growth shows no signs of slowing, and we are seeing the positive impact in new collaborations between our members.

The LifeScience Academy is kicking off on 24th May 2016 with 'The Patents Instruction Manual' workshop delivered by Abel & Imray, teaching you what you need to know about IP in a research organisation.

Our key dates for the year are firmly in place: UK HealthTech conference on 6th December 2016, and MediWales Innovation Awards on 13th December 2016.

Event blog - Investing in innovation: the future of life science in Wales

After many years of investment drought, UK life science funding hit a 10-year high in 2015. To celebrate and explore this, MediWales and BIA delivered the event ‘Investing in innovation – the future of life science in Wales’ for 100 delegates. The programme included investor and political panel discussions, a talk from the London Stock Exchange, a Welsh industry showcase, technology presentations, and tours of GE Healthcare.

The top investment tips were:
  • Melanie Goward, Finance Wales: “Networking. Build partnerships and credibility.”
  • Andrew Evans, Geldards LLP: “Get your contracts right and make sure your figures add up. Get an accountant and have IP. You need to look investable and know where your value is.”
  • Stuart Plant, IP Group: “Don’t be scared of dreaming big. We like a big story.”
  • Justin John, Welsh Government: “Collaborate, join clusters and position yourself near other companies. Disruptive technologies come from small companies and entrepreneurs; be brave.”
