Children's Law Center NEWS is HERE!

CHILDREN'S LAW CENTER E-NEWS                                                         MARCH 2015

Thank you, Richard!

We recently gathered with our friends at Robins Kaplan to celebrate and honor Richard (Dick) Nigon’s many years of dedicated service to Children’s Law Center. Dick began volunteering with CLC in 1998 when he served as chair of our finance committee. He served on our board of directors from 2001 until 2007, including serving as board president from 2003 to 2004.  Dick joined CLC’s board for a second term from 2009 through 2014, serving as treasurer.

Over the years, his volunteer work with us has included extensive assistance with financial management and bookkeeping. When we moved into our current office space in 2005, Dick secured donated office furniture for us and organized a crew of volunteers to help with the move. He has supported all three of CLC’s executive directors with his administrative and business expertise.
Dick says, “I love children, and volunteering brings me satisfaction from helping out where there is a distinct need.”
We are deeply indebted to Dick for ALL that he has done and continues to do for us and on behalf of the children we serve.

Welcome New Board Members

Kathleen Ruhland of DLA Piper. Her work focuses on cross-border transactions, including mergers & acquisitions, restructuring and joint ventures throughout the world.

Tom Marek of Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly’s Corporate Finance & Transactions Practice Group. Tom has been a volunteer attorney with CLC since 2008 and has so far represented eight CLC clients.

Denise Rahne of Robins Kaplan LLP is a trial attorney representing fiduciaries, businesses, and institutional investors. A CLC volunteer since 2003, she has so far represented nine CLC clients.

Intern Spotlight

Say hello to CLC law intern Alexandra Meyer. She is currently in her second year of law school at William Mitchell College of Law. Alex is very interested in advocating for children and is working on a number of important projects for CLC. She has plenty of hands-on experience with students as a Marshall Brennan Fellow and as a tutor. We are happy to have her at CLC and look forward to working with her through the summer.

Welcome also to paralegal intern Erica Clarys. Erica has a degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota and is currently in her final semester at Hamline University in the paralegal certificate program. After graduating, she hopes to work as a paralegal in the areas of juvenile or family law.

CLC managing attorney Anne Gueinzius and volunteer attorney Rachel Zimmerman, Richard Kyle, a special advocate to CLC clients, and former volunteers Kathryn Nash and Joshua Williams -- were all selected as Minnesota Lawyer’s 2014 Attorneys of the Year
Congrats also to four CLC volunteers who have recently been elected partners at their firms:
Archana Nath - Oppenheimer, Wolff & Donnelly
Melanie Full - Stinson Leonard Street
Elizabeth Odette - Lockridge Grindal Nauen
David Schlesinger - Nichols Kaster
AND congratulations to Larry Espel, a longtime volunteer and friend who has been selected for the Hennepin County Bar Association’s Pro Bono Publico Award!

Superheroes Are Urgently Needed!

Because of the recent media attention on the child protection system, more children are coming into the system. As a result, CLC's caseload has seriously increased.

We need more volunteers!
Volunteer attorneys for CLC represent foster care youth in court and ensure their voices are heard. NO prior experience in family or juvenile court is necessary.

Foster care kids need YOU.
