Christmas Countdown: 8 days to go
It's our first Christmas and we are excited!

Today we feature Sydney based artist Simon Collins.

Introducing Simon Collins

Simon Collins is another Artist who has been involved with ART500 from the very earliest planning days.

An expressive painter, Simon's focus is on depicting the everyday. His approach is so immediate that you get the sense Simon has gone out in traffic to run errands, paid attention to his surroundings and then come home to paint exactly what he had experienced that same day.

His observations of traffic jams, soccer games, beaches and Sydney's urban roadways are painted so as to elevate the standing of the subject. They give us pause to consider the ordinary as a good and worthwhile part of life, and certainly a worthy subject to make Art about.
Simon's studio is at the rear of his family home. He describes his studio as "comfortable chaos, part studio, part mancave". It's also a greenhouse for Simon's growing obsession with Carnivorous plants. Simon prepares all of his own cradled ply timber supports to paint on, so at times, the studio is a woodworking workshop too. The studio space morphs and flexes as needed.
Like all of the Artists on ART500, Simon has a house filled with Art. He greatly admires Lucy Culliton, whose Cactus and Shell paintings are shown here along with art works by Dianne Gall, Erika Gofton, Deb Mostert, Sue Beyer and others.

Simon currently has available on ART500. a series of small traffic based oil paintings that reflect his fascination with the ordinary

A bit more about Simon...

When Simon isn't painting, he spends his time with his young family, gardening or mountain biking around local trails and Royal National Park. Carnivorous plants have developed to become borderline obsession. There’s a good chance that both his mountain biking experiences and carnivourous plants could start marking their presence into his paintings in the future.

For Christmas Simon will be taking a break, holidaying on the South Coast NSW, where he is looking forward to recharging and gathering reference material for new paintings in 2016.
Thought for the Day

A quote that appeals to Simon, is this one:

'Better to try and fail than never to try at all'

Poem by William F. O'Brien
