Engaged Cities Award Finalists

On April 16, Cities of Service announced the 10 finalists for the first ever Engaged Cities Award, our new effort to elevate cities that are working creatively to tap the wisdom, talents, and energy of community members to solve public problems. We received more than one hundred applications from cities in the Americas and Europe.

Cities of Service spent time over the last month visiting finalist cities and learning more about how they have successfully engaged their citizens to help them solve a variety of problems. The strategies used by cities included harnessing the power of civic tech, participatory design, impact volunteering, citizen-sourced data, and more.

Volunteer Brian Howard grew up in the neighborhood and was participating in his 10th Comcast Cares Day.
Comcast Cares Day in Detroit

On Saturday, April 21, Cities of Service participated in Comcast Cares Day in Detroit with community partners, Comcast employees, and residents.

Volunteers made repairs, removed yard waste, and cleared brush along a residential alley. Volunteers also picked up litter and participated in other beautification efforts along a nearby commercial corridor, which includes four Project Green Light businesses. Eliminating blight in the area will further encourage business activity in the neighborhood and potentially motivate other businesses to participate in Project Green Light, a public-private-community partnership that combines real-time crime-fighting technology and community policing to improve neighborhood safety.

The day also served as a kick-off of our new partnership with Comcast and the City of Detroit. We will continue to work with Chief Service Officer Victoria Kovari and Comcast on neighborhood revitalization projects in additional locations throughout the year, including an upcoming Motor City Makeover event. With this partnership, Comcast NBCUniversal volunteers are an integral part of making Detroit a safer, stronger city.

Mayor Duggan joined by Senator Stabenow at a recent house meeting with Detroit residents.

Where Was Cities of Service This Month?

House Meeting with Mayor Duggan in Detroit
In addition to participating in Comcast Cares Day, Cities of Service had the opportunity to join Mayor Duggan at one of his house meetings with residents. Also joined by Senator Stabenow, the mayor sat on a resident’s living room couch, talking with about twenty of his constituents. There were no press, no microphones, or multimedia presentations – just a group of people talking to one another. A staple of the mayor's campaign and time in office, it is one of the many ways he engages with residents, answering questions and addressing problems, large and small.
Meeting with Mayor Schor in Lansing
After our visit in Detroit, we headed to Lansing to see Love Your Block and other initiatives in action. The Cities of Service Love Your Block AmeriCorps VISTAs Ben Thompson and Clara Martinez gave us a tour of project sites and we met with our longtime partner in Lansing, Andi Crawford, the city's neighborhood resource coordinator. We also had our first in-person meeting with newly elected Mayor Schor and learned more about his plans to engage the residents of Lansing!

Bloomberg Philanthropies 2018 American Mayors Survey
Bloomberg Philanthropies released the results of its 2018 American Mayors Survey, the largest and most comprehensive survey of mayors to date. The survey reveals that America’s mayors increasingly feel on the hook for addressing major policy and funding issues – from infrastructure to immigration – that were once under the purview of federal or state governments.
