Behind the Scenes of Love Your Block in Buffalo

Cities of Service AmeriCorps VISTA members Emily Gallivan and Nina Dinh act as liaisons between residents and City Hall in Buffalo, one of ten legacy cities participating in our Love Your Block program. The program creates resident-led neighborhood improvements, block by block. Interested in what that change looks like on the ground? Emily and Nina gave us a behind-the-scenes look.

The Legacy of Prepared Together

Checking in with Program Partners

After our programs end, we stay in touch with city staff and AmeriCorps VISTA members who continue to engage citizens to improve their own communities.
  • Stephen Stolte, Assistant to the City Manager in Daly City, played a key role in our Prepared Together program, working to expand the city's tree canopy. Read our interview with him
  • For the most recent entry in our Where Are They Now? series, we checked in with Sam Gordon, who served as a Cities of Service Resilience AmeriCorps VISTA member in New Orleans. Today, he's Communications Manager for the city. Read his story here.

Boston's Safest Driver: A Case Study

Bad driving in Boston makes matters worse in the city's notoriously congested streets. In order to increase accountability among drivers, city staff partnered with a tech firm to create an app that allows citizens to track and improve their driving performance and make the city safer. Read our new case study about Boston's Safest Driver, the program that earned the city a place as a finalist for the 2018 Engaged Cities Award.

Where was Cities of Service?

  • Our Executive Director Myung J. Lee, Program Manager Rose Rodriguez, and Love Your Block AmeriCorps VISTA Leader Talia Ramella visited Newark, one of ten cities participating in our Love Your Block program. In addition to meeting with city staff and Mayor Ras Baraka, they toured blighted properties that residents hope to revitalize through Love Your Block.
