Welcome to my new-look eNews for 2014.
Given everyone’s busy, I’ll be keeping these updates short and sharp.  Just click through on any of the links that interest you for more detailed information on current news issues.
Last week we had the positive news that there has not been a single illegal offshore boat arrival in 36 days – the longest period in nearly 5 years.  This is a sign that the policies we took to the last election are beginning to work, but there is still a long way to go.
Yesterday Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced an efficiency study on the ABC and SBS. While I believe in the value of a public broadcaster, I agree with the Prime MInister's recent comments about the ethos that appears to have developed at the ABC.
Many people have told me how pleased they are that Education Minister Christopher Pyne has announced a Review of the National Curriculum. The Review will be headed by Professor Kenneth Wiltshire and Dr Kevin Donnelly. I encourage everyone with an interest in education to make a public submission to the Review by 28th February – click here for the Terms of Reference.
While Parliament returns in February for the busy pre-Budget sittings, we’ve declared our first “Repeal day” as part of our commitment to tackle red tape.  Labor introduced 21,000 new regulations and I’m looking forward to voting to scrap those that add to the red tape burden on businesses and the community.
The Leader of the Government in the Senate, Eric Abetz recently gave an excellent speech about the need to ensure we protect our society’s foundations.  He talked about the importance of the Liberal Party not selling itself short by concentrating only on economics, but the need to defend and strengthen our society’s actual foundations. This point was well summed up when he said: "I think the great Menzies wanted us to realise that getting the societal values right was not simply linked to economic well-being but was in fact its fundamental prerequisite."

Finally, I welcome the appointment of General Peter Cosgrove as our next Governor General.  He is an outstanding Australian who I’m sure will serve our nation very well.
Until next month,
