New Architectural Models Envisioned by Areti Markopoulou

Interviewed by the MIT Technology Review, IAAC Academic Director Areti Markopoulou questioned the inability of our cities and buildings to adapt to changes.

Areti spoke about her research, which explores new architectural models that incorporate the application of ICTs, Material Intelligence and Fabrication, allowing built and public space to dynamically adapt to behavioural and environmental changes over time.

The advent of robotics in the creative and construction industry has led to a surprising revolution which will be the subject of Rob|Arch 2018, taking place this week at ETH Zurich.

Master in Robotics and Advanced Construction (MRAC) Co-directors Alexandre Dubor and Aldo Sollazzo will join the conference this Friday to talk about On Site Robotics for Sustainable Construction in the Control and Fabrication debate session.

Geometry and Structural Behaviour in Adobe Printing at the OTF Kick-off

Walls, the first Open Thesis Fabrication (OTF) workshop 2018/19, kicked off last week at IAAC, led by Programme's Co-directors Alexandre Dubor and Edouard Cabay.

The aim of the course is to give students the occasion to print thin surfaces and explore the relationship between geometry and structural behaviour in adobe printing, supported by the structural engineering company
Windmill. The results will be tested both physically and digitally.

Distributed Design Summit: Creative Minds for Productive Cities

The DDMP Distributed Design Summit, held last week in the framework of the Techfestival, aimed at drawing the outline of a tailor-made road map for the city of Copenhagen to reach the ambitious goal of becoming fully self-sustainable by 2054.  

An international line-up of speakers, including Master in Design for Emergent Futures (MDEF) Co-director Tomás Díez, opened up a discussion on the future of production and consumption in a digital and globalised world. 

[IAAC MAEB > The Urban Simulator]

IAAC Collaborates With the Barcelona Supercomputing Center 

Researchers from IAAC, led by Master in Advanced Ecological Building (MAEB) Co-director Vicente Guallart, will soon start working together with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center on the creation of an Urban Simulator.

Within this project, part of the initiatives carried on by the platform, the information about mobility, matter cycles and all the layers that make up cities will be translated into mathematical algorithms.

Utsav Mathur is a Master in Advanced Architecture (MAA) graduate, and an active member of the Open Source and Maker Movement, currently playing a leading role in their development in his homeland India. With his venture GMETRI Studio, he's currently focusing on Virtual & Augmented Reality and the solutions they can bring to Real-Estate.


MaCT VEUS at the Dubai Design Week

IAAC is glad to announce that the Master in City & Technology (MaCT) project VEUS is among the works that will represent IAAC at the Dubai Design Week Global Grad Show. VEUS is an app for participatory design process that uses Augmented Reality to allow a seamless and constant dialogue between the municipality and the citizens.

IAAC Pre Course Kicks-off Next Monday!

The 2018/19 pre-course is about to start! This introductory two-weeks course will include four modules covering topics that will be necessary to properly attend the different Master courses. Social activities in Barcelona will also be organised during these extra-academic sessions, to welcome at the Institute the first group of students from this academic year.​
