2018 Advanced Neighborhood Leadership Academy begins May 3

Just Announced!
The Neighborhood Leadership Academy is a free, seven-session program developed specifically for leaders, members, and organizers of associations that seek to be the voice of their neighborhoods.

The 2018 Academy will help you grow your organization and connect with your neighbors by focusing on what really matters to them. The Academy is perfect for current leaders, as well as members who don’t hold leadership positions yet -- but might like to.

Sessions begin May 3. Round up a few neighbors and apply beginning March 19! Learn more.

Neighborhood cleanup? Let the city help.

Contact South Bend Code Enforcement to schedule your event

April is a great month to organize your neighborhood cleanup (things look a little trashy when the snow melts). That’s straight from the City of South Bend’s Department of Code Enforcement leaders Tracy and Tom, who recently visited with members of the Near West Side Neighborhood Organization, shown above.

Here's a bonus: if your neighborhood organizes a cleanup day and schedules it with Code Enforcement at least three weeks in advance, they'll provide trash bags, gloves, dumpsters, and other assistance as needed. More information.

Upcoming Neighborhood Cleanups:

  • Near Northwest Neighborhood: Sat., April 14th, 8am-noon.  Meet at 1007 Portage.
  • Near West Side Neighborhood: Sat., April 21st. Location TBA. Meet at 8:00 a.m. for conversation, and head out at 9. Join everyone for the after party!
  • River Park Neighborhood: Sat., April 28th, 10am-noon. Meet at corner of Pleasant and Ironwood OR Corner of Ironwood and Mishawaka.

Got hazardous waste? HHW is standing by.

Old tires shouldn’t be discarded in our neighborhoods, and old paint shouldn’t go down our drains. Where should it go? St Joseph County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility will take your fluorescent bulbs, electronics, batteries, fuels, pesticides, and all that other nasty stuff that we hate to see dumped in alleys. They’re ready for your (free!) dropoff M-F 8:30-4:00, and Sat. 8:00-noon. Find them at their new South Bend home at 828 Kerr St., 46601. Follow SJC Waste Management on Twitter at @sjcrecycling.

Thank you from SBBW Community Partners

NRC, The Music Village, and La Casa de Amistad appreciate the great turnout for the first Community Partners Happy Hour of 2018, when representatives and friends of all three Community Partners were on hand to support the organizations -- and to thank South Bend Brew Werks for supporting us via their Beer for Good program. Let’s do it again next month, shall we?

Also watch for NRC’s own brew coming in April... Every pint of NRC’s specially-brewed Tango Mango Wheat will benefit NRC for the entire month. Save the date for a tapping party on April 4. Ole!

Free conference on Education, Literacy, Community, and Citizenship

Honoring the career contributions of Dr. Stuart Greene

Join us for a one-day conference honoring the career contributions of Dr. Stuart Greene, one of the driving forces behind NRC’s Engaging Youth, Engaging Neighborhoods program. Free and open to the public, and community members are especially encouraged. Friday, March 23, 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (please register by March 16). See flyer (JPG), or register on the website

Back the Bend is Saturday, April 14

Mulch! Paint! Install storm drains! Mulch some more!

NRC is proud to support this year’s Back the Bend, an annual service event formerly known as CommUniversity Day. This is the ninth year that the University of Notre Dame has partnered with the South Bend community and other local colleges and universities to carry out upwards of twenty service projects on a Saturday in April. Each year, hundreds of volunteers participate in this day of service. Grab your gloves, browse the projects and sign up for your favorite here.
